The Association of Contract Football Players e. V. ( VDV ) is a players' union for professional soccer players with around 1,300 members. It organizes football players in the German professional leagues. However, youth players (at least 15 years of age) at the start of their professional career as well as former professional football players who are now playing abroad and who have ended their career can also become or remain members.

The club was founded on June 15, 1987 in Offenbach am Main by the then professional footballers Benno Möhlmann , Ewald Lienen and Frank Pagelsdorf together with colleagues such as Guido Buchwald , Florian Gothe , Charly Körbel , Bruno Labbadia and Stefan Lottermann . It should serve as a lobby for professional footballers for professional footballers. This applied (initially) in particular to the areas of working and contractual conditions, independence and co-determination, the democratization of football and, overall, to give the players a common voice vis-à-vis clubs and associations.

membership

Only natural persons who are employed as professional football players in the German professional leagues can become members of the VDV. The exact condition of membership is:

"Ordinary active members of the VDV can become any person who is employed as a football player for a club of the DFB, a regional or state association belonging to it, or the league association or a subsidiary of such a club, or who can demonstrably strive for such employment and that Have reached the age of 15, regardless of whether you have already been able to establish a corresponding employment relationship in the past. "

With the final termination of the professional playing career, active members automatically become passive members. Former professional players can only join the VDV as passive members. In addition to the full members, there are honorary members. Membership ends through death, resignation or exclusion.

Organs and structure

The organs of the VDV are the players 'assembly, the executive committee and the players' council.

Players meeting

The players' assembly consists of all members of the VDV and is its highest body.

Only regular active members employed by teams in the professional leagues (Bundesliga, 2nd Bundesliga, 3rd league and regional leagues) are entitled to vote. They elect delegates independently for one season in teams, who exercise their voting rights for them. Each of the named teams with VDV members sends at least one representative, every five members an additional representative. If - as with the Bundesliga clubs - two teams from a club play in the top four divisions, they vote separately and independently of each other.

The task of the players' meeting includes the election, dismissal and discharge of the presidium to which it is authorized to issue instructions. In addition, it makes resolutions on changes to the statutes, membership fees and rules of procedure, as well as the granting or withdrawal of honorary membership and honorary presidency. In addition, it is the objection authority with regard to the admission or exclusion of an applicant or member.

Bureau

The Presidium includes the President, two deputies and the treasurer as elected members with voting rights. On the other hand, the full-time managing director as executive board member in an advisory capacity without being elected due to his office.

The task of the Presidium is to represent and manage the VDV and to manage its day-to-day business. This includes in particular bookkeeping, balance sheet and annual report, participation in committees and associations, press work and publication of the association magazine "WIR PROFIS", collective bargaining as well as admission, deletion and exclusion of members.

The current president of the federal executive board is Florian Gothe , the vice-presidents are Carsten Ramelow and Christoph Metzelder . The treasurer is Frank Rybak. The managing directors of the VDV are Ulf Baranowsky and Lars Kindgen .

Player Council

The players' council (according to the 2010 statutes) consists of four players from the Bundesliga , three players from the 2nd Bundesliga , two players from the 3rd division and one player from each of the five regional leagues .

The members of the players' council are appointed by the executive committee in agreement with the remaining members. The players' council advises the executive committee and presents the VDV to the public.

The current members of the players' council are Sebastian Rudy and Andreas Luthe from the Bundesliga , Robin Himmelmann ( 2nd Bundesliga ), Maximilian Ahlschwede ( 3rd league ), Addy-Waku Menga and Benjamin Gommert from the regional league and Thorsten Stuckmann, who is not a club .

Further structures

The VDV maintains an office in Duisburg at the same time as the seat of the VDV-Wirtschaftsdienste GmbH. A team of six team supervisors looks after VDV members and teams on site. Since 2003, the VDV has been running the VDV Camp, a training camp for professionals and convalescents without a club, in the Wedau sports school in Duisburg during the summer months. In this context, team training and performance diagnostics as well as competitive practice through test matches against high-class opponents take place under professional conditions.

Tasks and work

The task and purpose of the association are to protect and promote the economic, social, professional and cultural interests of its members as well as football in general. It represents the interests of its members towards associations, clubs, players' agents and journalists. In German labor law , the VDV is a typical functional elite . At the international level, FIFPro, as an international association of players' unions, represents the interests of UEFA and FIFA .

Various support and services are offered to its members - for example the VDV camp for players and convalescents without a club , legal (employment) support, career advice, assistance with old-age and health care, emergency assistance, and media training and advice.

The VDV has implemented improved switching options for professionals without a club. Together with Jean-Marc Bosman and the European players' unions, the freedom of transfer was obtained after the end of the contract. The clubs' obligation to pay vacation pay was included in the DFB model employment contract. The premiums earned are now also taken into account when continuing to pay in the event of illness . In addition, the clubs could be obliged to have all licensed players undergo a sports medical performance check including a cardiac examination once a year at the beginning of the season.

Further initiatives are aimed at the advancing democratization of football, dealing with racism, discrimination and violence in football and the fight against doping. In connection with the latter, the VDV describes it as a central task of the VDV to "protect the health of the players and the credibility of football".
