Niklas Süle (born September 3, 1995 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German soccer player . After several years at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , he has been playing almost exclusively as a central defender at Bayern Munich since 2017 . He has been in the same position in the German national team since 2016 .

Origin and education

Süle's family comes from Hungary on his father's side . His grandfather György emigrated to Germany with his wife from the Hungarian capital Budapest . His father Georg was born in Germany, but until he was 16 he had both a German and a Hungarian passport. Süle's parents separated when he was four years old; he has a brother who is three years older, who is also football enthusiast. Because of his surname, which is similar to the Turkish name Süleyman , Süle once received a request from representatives of the Turkish Football Association who thought he was of Turkish descent.

Beginnings

Süle started playing football at Rot-Weiß Walldorf and at the age of ten moved to the youth department of Eintracht Frankfurt , for which he was active for three seasons. In June 2009 he moved to SV Darmstadt 98 , to which he was a member for six months before he was signed by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim during the winter break .

For the 2012/13 season, Süle moved up to the second team of Hoffenheim, for which he was used six times in two seasons in the Regionalliga Südwest . In his first season the defender also made his first appearances in the Bundesliga . He made his debut on May 11, 2013 (33rd matchday) in the 1: 4 defeat in the home game against Hamburger SV . At 17 years, 8 months and 8 days until February 8, 2020, the defender was the youngest player that TSG had played in the Bundesliga. Süle made his debut on October 15, 2010 in the U16 national team , which won 3-2 in Göttingen against the Northern Irish selection .
