The 2017/18 Bundesliga was the 55th season of the top German division in men's football . It began on August 18, 2017 a home game of the defending champions Bayern Munich against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (3: 1) and ended on May 12, 2018. From December 18 2017 to January 11, 2018, it was by a shortened winter break interrupted .
On matchday 29, FC Bayern Munich became German football champions for the sixth time in a row with a 4-1 away win at FC Augsburg . After the 32nd matchday, 1. FC Köln was the first to be relegated to the 2. Bundesliga . On the last day of the match, Hamburger SV, the last club that had been in the top division since the introduction of the Bundesliga, was relegated. The VfL Wolfsburg reached the relegation place and secured against the third of the 2nd Bundesliga Holstein Kiel to stay in the class.
Season course
Championship fight and fight for international starting positions
The FC Bayern München had a good start to the season, but had to on Matchday 3 after two opening victories of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim with 0: 2 admit defeat and thus conceded unusually early first defeat of the season. The increasingly inconsistent game management under Carlo Ancelotti meant that the connection to the league leaders from Dortmund was missed early. After a 2-2 on matchday 6 against VfL Wolfsburg, where they lost a 2-0 lead and the subsequent 3-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, they saw no more prospects and dismissed Ancelotti . As it turned out after the dismissal, in addition to a lack of flexibility with regard to the team's game systems, the behavior towards key players such as Thomas Müller , Arjen Robben or Franck Ribéry , who Ancelotti had kept on the reserve bench in important games, had led to this decision. After a draw against Hertha BSC under interim coach Willy Sagnol , Jupp Heynckes was surprisingly presented as the new head coach for his fourth term in office. Under the veteran who returned from retirement, the team managed a 5-0 win against SC Freiburg , the only other defeat of FC Bayern until the end of the first half of the season was at Heynckes' old place of work in Mönchengladbach, where they lost 2-1. Even the training injury of the new captain Manuel Neuer , which meant the end of the season for him, was compensated by the team with his substitute Sven Ulreich after minor starting difficulties. Even the reactivated Tom Starke was able to assert himself again in his 100th Bundesliga game. Due to the fierce competition for Europe, the league primus was able to expand its championship lead almost unhindered. After Hoffenheim and Mönchengladbach, RB Leipzig was only the third team on matchday 27 to cause Munich a defeat this season. This did not change the fact that the record champions were able to celebrate their sixth championship in a row prematurely on the 29th matchday. On the last day of the match they lost against VfB Stuttgart 1: 4.
Schalke 04 ended his employment relationship with Markus Weinzierl during the summer break and signed Domenico Tedesco , who had previously led FC Erzgebirge Aue to stay in the league. Schalke started the new season with a 2-0 home win over RB Leipzig and established themselves in the European places during the first half of the season. Playfulness and creativity found their way back into the game tactics of the Royal Blues under Tedesco. For example, in the Revierderby, after a 4-0 deficit in Dortmund in stoppage time, a 4: 4 that was previously not considered possible could be achieved. The second half of the season started very mixed, but from the 25th matchday onwards the team only lost one game and was runner-up at the end of the season.
Borussia Dortmund's season started hopefully. Before the season, Peter Bosz was signed by Europa League finalists Ajax Amsterdam. After a 3-0 win at VfL Wolfsburg, BVB went into a frenzy and defended the top of the table until matchday 8 without a single defeat. With a 6: 1 against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 6, they also celebrated the greatest success in the entire first half of the season. The soaring did not last long, however. On the 8th match day, the black and yellow lost against runner-up RB Leipzig at home with 2: 3, which was the first home defeat in the Bundesliga after two and a half years. After a draw and another defeat, this time against Hannover 96 , the team had to hand over rank 1 to Bayern on matchday 10 and slipped into a negative series. Up to the 16th matchday there were only two draws and three defeats, and in the Champions League they moved into the Europa League with luck and a very poor result of only two points. The highlight of the Dortmund crisis was the 4: 4 in the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 when they gave up a 4-goal lead. It was the end for Peter Bosz as head coach. After his dismissal before the 16th matchday, he was followed by Austrian Peter Stöger , who had previously been dismissed from 1. FC Köln and instilled a new fighting spirit into the team. Despite everything, this continued to struggle with the failure of Marco Reus , who was missing due to an injury, an unstable defense, a lack of speed in the center and a moody Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang , who was still top scorer and scorer of BVB. On the one hand, Aubameyang put the team's peace to the test with his provocative behavior and clear intentions to move; on the other, BVB still missed its important goals in every game in which he was not in the squad. Nevertheless, from now on only wins and draws under Stöger. With two wins under Stöger at the end of the first half of the season, after a temporary fall to 10th place, Dortmund reached 3rd place in the winter. After Aubameyang's move to Arsenal in January 2018, the Belgian Michy Batshuayi was signed on loan from Chelsea, an accurate striker. who scored twice in his league debut and also proved his qualities as a joker, but was canceled a few game days before the end due to injury. Marco Reus, who extended his contract to 2023 in March 2018, was finally back after a long break and complemented the team with his usual strong game, at times even captaining Marcel Schmelzer , who was removed from the squad . On the 28th matchday it was the biggest defeat of the season with a 6-0 draw against Bayern and at the same time the biggest bankruptcy since 1991.
Relegation battle
While the two promoted Hannover 96 and VfB Stuttgart managed to stay in the league, the fight to stay in the league was clearly determined by the fate of 1. FC Köln and Hamburger SV. From the third matchday onwards, the Cologne team held the entire first half of the season over the red lantern and joined various negative record lists. The first win of the season was achieved by the “mentally and physically badly damaged” team at the end of the first half of the season under coach Stefan Ruthenbeck, who was signed on for predecessor Peter Stöger, which at the same time prevented the negative leader Tasmania Berlin from being overtaken as the worst first half team. With six points, the "Effzeh" wintered behind Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen with 15 points each. In addition to an increasingly long list of injuries in the first half of the season, which resulted in the appropriate deployment of several youth players in the professional team in both the league and in the DFB Cup, the double burden of the missions in the surprisingly achieved group phase of the Europa League also played. where Cologne beat Arsenal and BATE Baryssau , among others , a role. After Ruthenbeck's engagement, the team played stronger and began to catch up. After the 24th matchday, Cologne was still in 18th place, but had scored 11 points from seven games and was tied with the 17th, Hamburg. After a 2-0 win against Leverkusen, Effzeh passed the red lantern on to Hamburg on the 27th for the first time since the 3rd matchday. After the meanwhile high flight, however, one game day later, Hoffenheim overran them 6-0.
Also the aforementioned teams from Werder Bremen, which had finished the preseason in midfield, and Hamburger SV, which as "Liga Dino" barely prevented the historical relegation until 2016/17 , increasingly developed into problem children. Also Florian Kohfeldt , who as a former coach of the second team of the Bremen predecessor Alexander Nouri followed into the professional business, the combative captain Max Kruse or reflex strong Czech Jiří Pavlenka (with 20 goals against third-best value of the first round) in the gate could have a disastrous first round with the second-worst goal tally the league (thirteen goals together with VfB Stuttgart before 1. FC Köln) and only three victories with wintering on the relegation site. On the 24th matchday, Bremen made it out of the relegation zone after a 1-0 win in the north derby against Hamburg, and the team ended the season in eleventh place. It was precisely those Hamburgers who provided rifle assistance on matchday 32, which gave the Werder team their relegation.
During the winter break, VfB reacted to this low goal by signing striker Mario Gomez , who was playing for the club for the second time , but who was only able to score one goal in 12 appearances for VfL Wolfsburg and only in a duel against his ex-club again met once. Especially since the departure of attacker Simon Terodde (similarly harmless with 2 goals in 15 games), which 1. FC Köln secured, had to be compensated. On the first two game days of the second half of the season, Terodde scored sensationally effectively with just a few shots on goal three goals. Furthermore, coach Hannes Wolf had to vacate his post after the 20th match day and was replaced by Tayfun Korkut , under whom even Gomez scored more often and sometimes even twice. Under Korkut, which was viewed very critically at the beginning, VfB continued to move away from the relegation zone, in which Wolfsburg and 1. FSV Mainz 05 were still located. On the 31st matchday, VfB managed to keep their league prematurely, fellow promoted Hannover 96 followed two weekends later, as did Mainz 05.
On the part of HSV, the actions of the Brazilian Walace caused a lot of unrest in the team off the field. The hardly playing and in January 2017 committed for 9.2 million euros, potential top performers rather hired himself out with the search for a potential new employer and a lack of participation in the team's activities. Even Bobby Wood , who was trusted by his coach Markus Gisdol in 13 games , did not get more than a single goal in view of a form low. On the defensive, defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos and regular goalkeeper Christian Mathenia stood out with several gross blunders. After a good performance in the test phase of the winter break, Mathenia's direct competitor Julian Pollersbeck stood between the posts on the first match day of the second half of the season , but was soon replaced by Mathenia. Bernd Hollerbach surprisingly returned to the Elbe as Gisdol's successor after the 2-0 draw in the basement duel against 1. FC Köln. Despite everything, the worst team in the second half of the season was in the deep red area with 3 hits and 2 points from games after the 24th matchday, even Cologne had meanwhile scored more goals and only a slightly better goal difference separated the Dino from 18th place Cologne during the Stöger era was the same , on the square, in addition to the mismanagement around CEO Heribert Bruchhagen, there was a bad atmosphere at the club level and anger with the angry fans. Bruchhagen was released at the beginning of March, as was sports director Jens Todt . In mid-March they were followed by the unsuccessful Hollerbach after the 6-0 debacle against Bayern. The badly battered club was then taken over by the Bundesliga-inexperienced, previous coach of the successful second team, Christian Titz , who could not prevent the first relegation to last place on matchday 27 and as a consequence players like Walace joined the successful regional league team banished. He achieved his first respectable success with a 3-2 win for his HSV against the table runner-up from Gelsenkirchen, which also pushed Cologne back to last place. After the 32nd matchday, 1. FC Köln was the first to be relegated, while Hamburger SV was able to shorten the gap to relegation place 16 to two points. On a curious last matchday, SC Freiburg saved itself with a victory over weak Augsburgers, Hamburg was dependent on help from Cologne against its direct competitor Wolfsburg. But the victory in one of the best HSV games of the season didn't help - Wolfsburg held the relegation place after a 4-1 over 18th and the last remaining Dino in the Bundesliga had to start the bitter path to the second division after 54 years. The stoppage time set at two minutes was overshadowed, which could only be kicked off after a quarter-hour break. Angry Hamburg fans who, among other things , threw Bengalos onto the field, forced the Hamburg police and stadium stewards to intervene.

Stadiums, spectators, sponsorships and outfitters
With the relegation of FC Ingolstadt and SV Darmstadt 98, which have very small stadiums, and the simultaneous rise of Hannover 96 and VfB Stuttgart with larger-than-average arenas, the audience capacity of the 18 Bundesliga stadiums increased by around 73,000 compared to the previous season. This corresponded to about a tenth more seats in the stadiums than in 2016/17. Accordingly, the average number of spectators increased by around 4,000 - a tenth more than in 2016/17 - with almost the same percentage of stadiums as in the previous year (91%).
After the central contract with Hermes Europe expired , the Bundesliga teams were allowed to conclude their own contracts with sleeve sponsors for the first time in the 2017/18 season.

useful information
General
- With the start of the season, video evidence was introduced as additional support for referees during the game. The video evidence was tested “offline” in the preseason, from this season a direct connection will be established between the main referee on the field and a video assistant. Not all controversial scenes are evaluated by the video assistant, but only those that involve possible goals, red cards (but not yellow-red cards ), penalties or mix-ups. This has already been on Matchday 1 in the season opening game on August 18, 2017 between FC Bayern Munich and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (3: 1) required after video assistant Jochen Drees referee Tobias Stieler on one of Charles Aránguiz to Robert Lewandowski perpetrated challenge had drawn attention ; Lewandowski converted the justified penalty kick in the 53rd minute to make it 3-0. After the first day of the match, the DFL criticized the service provider Hawkeye. In two matches, the system could only be used in the second half, and in one game it could not be used at all. In addition, the auxiliary line for offside decisions was not available for any of the 9 games. On November 6, the former referee Hellmut Krug was relieved of his duties as project manager of the video evidence after allegations of manipulation in favor of FC Schalke 04 in the game against VfL Wolfsburg (1: 1) on October 28 (matchday 10). However, the DFB stated that Krug's demotion was not related to the allegations. Instead, he will continue to be part of the project. The first player whose dismissal was subsequently withdrawn since the video evidence was introduced was Marius Wolf from Eintracht Frankfurt in the game against FC Bayern Munich (0: 1) on December 9th (15th matchday). After a report from the video assistant, Wolf had to be fetched back from the cabin by the kit manager.

- In the Monday game of the 30th matchday on April 16, 2018 between 1. FSV Mainz 05 against SC Freiburg , a curious scenario occurred: After the referee Guido Winkmann had whistled at half time and the players from Freiburg were already on their way to the dressing room found, the video assistant Bibiana Steinhaus from Cologne stepped in and pointed out a handball by the Freiburg defender Marc-Oliver Kempf . After examining the scene, Winkmann decided on a penalty kick and asked those responsible at SC Freiburg to get the team out of the dressing room in order to be able to take the penalty. After several minutes of discussion, Pablo de Blasis from Mainz converted the penalty kick to 1-0 lead. The game ended with a 2-0 for Mainz.
