Borussia Mönchengladbach became the first in the 1969/70 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

With coach Hennes Weisweiler and playmaker Günter Netzer , Borussia Mönchengladbach won their first championship title ahead of defending champions Bayern Munich. Four more championships were to be added by 1977.

As in the previous season, the top scorer was Gerd Müller from Bayern Munich with 38 goals.

The DFB Cup won this season not a team from the Bundesliga, but the regional league team Kickers Offenbach , which at the time of the final had already been promoted to the Bundesliga for the coming season.

Since this season, if there is a tie, the goal quotient no longer decides on the placement , but the goal difference .

    Remarkable

The two derbies between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 wrote a particularly curious chapter in Bundesliga history . On September 6, 1969 bite during the Ruhr classic one shepherd the players Friedel Rausch in the buttocks. After a tetanus injection given by the team doctor, Rausch could continue playing until the end. The reason was a goal scored by Johann Pirkner for Schalke. The Schalke fans, who were also on the running track around the lawn in the Rote Erde arena, stormed the lawn for joy. Police officers with shepherd dogs ran after them to call the crowd to order. A dog bit the player in the buttocks and a famous press photo was taken with this scene. The player Gerd Neuser was bitten in the thigh. For the second leg in Gelsenkirchen, Schalke President Günter Siebert borrowed tame lion cubs from the Löwenpark Graf Westerholt and had them lead to the kick-off point on a leash to intimidate the opponent. Due to these incidents in Dortmund, the DFB imposed a decree that dogs are only allowed in the stadium with a muzzle. Rausch received a compensation of 500 DM from Borussia Dortmund.
