Volker Danner (born August 21, 1942 - March 14, 2005 in Wesel ) was a German football goalkeeper . From 1963 to 1973 he played a total of 180 games in the Bundesliga for the clubs 1. FC Saarbrücken , Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg .

career

At the age of 19, the fast-reacting, supple and powerful goalkeeper made his debut at 1. FC Saarbrücken in the Southwest Football League . When he made his debut in the league on October 1, 1961 against SC Ludwigshafen, Werner "Vati" Hesse directed the defensive in front of the young talent of the Saarlanders. In the last two rounds of the old first-class league system, 1961/62 and 1962/63, 1. FC Saarbrücken came in third (1962) and fifth (1963) and Danner had played 45 league games in goal.

Saarbrücken was accepted into the newly created Bundesliga together with 1. FC Kaiserslautern from the Southwest Regional Association for the 1963/64 round. On the first day of the Bundesliga, on August 24, 1963, Danner was in Saarbrücken's case when the team of coach Helmut Schneider lost the home game with 0-2 goals against 1. FC Köln in front of 35,000 spectators. Despite a good goalkeeping performance - Dieter Haßdenteufel represented Danner in five games - Saarbrücken and Preußen Münster were relegated from the Bundesliga to the regional second division after their debut year 1963/64. Under national coach Sepp Herberger Danner came in the second half of the season on April 29, 1964 in Karlsbad in the international match of the junior national team U 23 against Czechoslovakia. In the German 1-0 success, he formed the defensive of the DFB selection together with Hartmut Heidemann , Horst-Dieter Höttges , Matthias Hemmersbach , Peter Kaack and Hans-Jürgen Becher . The goalkeeper stayed with his club in the Southwest Football Regionalliga and became champion in the Southwest alongside Emil Poklitar and Heinz Vollmar in 1965, thus advancing to the Bundesliga. There Danner failed but at the competitor FC Bayern Munich. The fact that he was still under observation by the DFB in the regional league was documented by his second appearance in the junior national team on June 25, 1965. He guarded the goal of the German selection in the Freiburg Möslestadion in the 1-0 win against England. Together with Theo Redder , Holger Dieckmann , Ludwig Müller , Hans Reich and Dieter Kurrat , he formed the defensive of the DFB-Elf. After a second year in the Regionalliga 1965/66, Saarbrücken became runner-up, but failed again in the promotion round, the goalkeeper accepted the offer of the Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach and played for the 1966/67 round on the Lower Rhine under coach Hennes Weisweiler .

He immediately took over the role of long-time goalkeeper Manfred Orzessek at Bökelberg and was only absent from one Bundesliga game in his first two rounds in Gladbach. In the preliminary round 1966/67 Danner completed his third junior international game. On October 12, 1966, he guarded the goal of the DFB selection in the German 3-0 win against Turkey in Saarbrücken. His new club mates Heinz Wittmann and Berti Vogts formed the defender couple, the runner row consisted of Jürgen Friedrich , Klaus Fichtel and Rudi Assauer . In his third season with the "Fohlen", 1968/69, Gladbach took third place in a row, and the young goalkeeper Wolfgang Kleff attracted attention for the first time with nine appearances . When he won the first German championship, 1969/70 , Kleff was the goalkeeper and Danner was only used on the final day of the round, on May 3, 1970, in the away game against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen.

For the 1970/71 round he therefore joined the MSV Duisburg. In the next two rounds he completed 58 league games with the "Zebras" under coach Rudi Faßnacht . His involvement in the game manipulation of the Bundesliga scandal then caused a career break. The DFB sports court was able to prove that he had negotiated an impermissible bonus for the last season game of the 1970/71 round against Bayern Munich - through an intermediary. Due to the subsequent four-month ban, opponent Dietmar Linders regained the lost regular place during the 1972/73 season.

During the 1973/74 season, he moved to Hamburger SV as the second man behind Rudi Kargus . However, knee problems forced him to take another break and, after an operation, to end his high-class career. Later he was still in the amateur field for the Weseler SV in use.
