career

FC Schalke 04 until 1971

As a B-youth, Becher joined FC Schalke 04 in 1956. The Schalke home-grown team was taken over by "Königsblau" in the upper league squad in 1960/61 together with his previous A-youth comrades Arno Cramer and Werner Ipta . In the first two round matches in August 1960 against 1. FC Köln (3: 3) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (2: 4), the defender and outside runner made his debut in what was then the first-class football league West . He was not part of the regular formation in the first two rounds; in his third league year, 1962/63, the last of the old league era, he achieved this goal with 24 league appearances and two goals scored. After the runner-up in 1962 in the West, the young player got to know the atmosphere of the final round of the German soccer championship as an active player on April 28, 1962 in Cologne in a group game against Tasmania 1900 Berlin . In a 1-1 draw, he and Willi Schulz and Egon Horst formed the western runner-up.

"Hannes" Becher also belonged to the Schalke team, which started on August 24, 1963 with a 2-0 home win in the new performance concentration of the Bundesliga. With Hans Nowak he formed the defender couple. At the end of the round, the team from the Glückauf-Kampfbahn finished 8th and Becher was missing in only one of the 30 round games. His defensive playing strength was also reflected in the fact that he was appointed by the DFB to three appearances in the U23 junior national team this season . He made his debut on September 25, 1963 in Karlsruhe in the international match against Bulgaria (0: 1) in the junior team and formed the defender pair in front of goalkeeper Manfred Manglitz with Josef Piontek in the then usual World Cup system . In the spring of 1964, two more international matches followed in the DFB's junior team. In the second Bundesliga year, 1964/65, his club took last place, but was able to remain in the Bundesliga in 1965/66 by increasing the league to 18 clubs. Up to and including the 1967/68 season, Becher experienced relegation battle year after year; only in the 1968/69 season when Rudi Gutendorf had replaced his predecessor Günter Brocker , who was in 17th place, from November 22nd, 1968 , a single-digit place in the table (7th place) came about for the first time. The highlight of this season was the DFB Cup. After successes over RW Oberhausen (3: 2 a.s.), SV Alsenborn (3: 1) and Alemannia Aachen (2: 0), the Gutendorf squad defeated 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the semifinals after two games (1: 1 a V., 3: 1) and moved into the final. That took place on June 14, 1969 in Frankfurt against the new Bundesliga champions FC Bayern Munich. FC Bayern, trained by Branko Zebec , had won their semi-final game 2-0 against 1. FC Nürnberg and went into the game as favorites. Since "Stan" Libuda was also weakened by a summer flu and playmaker Heinz van Haaren suffered from the consequences of an injury, the royal blue players could not turn the game after the two goals from record scorer Gerd Müller (13th and 35th minute) bring about. Bayern Munich won 2-1 and Schalke entered the European Cup as a finalist. In front of goalkeeper Nigbur, Becher had formed the Schalke defense together with Fichtel, Klaus Senger , Rausch and defensive midfielder Hermann Erlhoff . Becher played his first game in the DFB Cup with Schalke 04 as a junior player on August 22, 1962 in the semi-finals in a 2: 3 away defeat against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

In the 1969/70 season, Becher and his teammates competed in the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the quarter-final first leg on March 4, 1970 at Dinamo Zagreb, he scored the 3-1 winning goal in the 86th minute. The standard formation came on the defensive with goalkeeper Nigbur, the defenders Becher and Rausch as well as with Libero Fichtel and Vorstopper Rolf Rüssmann. In the semi-finals in the home game on April 1, a Libuda hit resulted in a 1-0 win, but in the second leg Schalke had no chance in a 5-1 defeat at Maine Road with defender Becher. The team around manager Joe Mercer and the outstanding players Colin Bell , Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee were too strong and then won the cup on April 29 in Vienna with a 2-1 victory over Zabrze.

The uncompromising defender is listed in the statistics of FC Schalke 04 from 1960 to 1971 with a total of 263 competitive appearances and six goals. After the round of 1970/71, his contract was no longer extended by the then President Günter Siebert and Becher joined the second -rate regional football league West Eintracht Gelsenkirchen .

Eintracht Gelsenkirchen, 1971 to 1974

For the 1971/72 season "Hannes" Becher hired at Eintracht Gelsenkirchen , who played in the second -rate regional football league West , where he ended his career in the summer of 1974. Under coach Heinz Murach , the defensive strategist played his first regional league game for Eintracht on August 15, 1971 in a 0-0 draw against Alemannia Aachen. At the end of the round, he had played 26 league games alongside fellow players like Günter Schwaba , Wolfgang Thier and Günther Thon and his new club was 10th.

At the functionary level, he was then involved in the merger of Eintracht Gelsenkirchen with STV Horst-Emscher , but then withdrew from this responsibility.

In the meantime, Becher has completely turned his back on football and for many years he ran the branch of an insurance company with his partner in the Bulmke-Hüllen district as a general agent and played golf in his free time.
