career

Youth and Oberliga Süd until 1960

The skills of the defensive player were already evident in Viktoria Aschaffenburg's youth . The DFB called the Aschaffenburg on March 31, 1957 in the line-up of the German youth national team for the international match in Oberhausen against England. In the 4-1 success he was in the middle position, Fritz Pott and Karl-Heinz Schnellinger formed the defender pair. At Easter 1957 he was part of the squad for the UEFA youth tournament in Spain. In all three group matches against Hungary (2: 2), Poland (2: 2) and Spain (1: 1), the talent from Aschaffenburg was on the pitch. For the team from the Stadion am Schönbusch he played five games as early as 1956/57 in the soccer Oberliga Süd as A-Junior alongside goalkeeper Othmar Groh and stopper Rudolf Hoffmann , scoring two goals. Horst made his debut in the major league on October 7, 1956 at the home game against FC Bayern Munich . In his first senior year 1957/58 he was in all 30 league games for Viktoria on the field. After relegation in the 1959/60 round, Horst moved to the football west after a total of 86 league appearances and three goals for his home club, he joined FC Schalke 04 for the 1960/61 season .

FC Schalke 04, 1960 to 1965

In "Königsblau", too, he immediately took the lead in the defense and, with his teammates Hans Nowak , Willi Schulz , Helmut Jagielski , Waldemar Gerhardt and Willi Koslowski, took third place in the West Football League in 1961 . In his second Schalke year, 1961/62, it was enough after 28 league appearances to runner-up and thus to the final round of the German championship. There he was active in the qualifying game against Werder Bremen and the three group games against 1. FC Nürnberg , Tasmania 1900 Berlin and Borussia Neunkirchen . Personally, his performance was rewarded once with his appointment to the U-23 national team on October 8, 1961 in Gelsenkirchen against Poland and his commitment on February 3, 1962 in Dortmund in the selection of West Germany in the game against South Germany. In the 5-0 success of the German youth team, he formed the runner row together with the two outside runners Otto Luttrop and Stefan Reisch . In the last year of the old first-class league, 1962/63, the ex-Aschaffenburger completed all 30 league games for the team of coach Georg Gawliczek . Overall, the headball-strong and not afraid of a duel, the stopper played 85 league games for Schalke from 1960 to 1963 and scored one goal.

Horst was one of the players who got the new Bundesliga up and running as an active player on August 24, 1963. With the runners Willi Schulz , Egon Horst and Manfred Kreuz , Schalke scored the first two points in the home game against VfB Stuttgart with a 2-0 win. At the end of the season, Horst only missed one game and finished eighth with Schalke. The second year of the Bundesliga, 1964/65, developed into a disaster, Schalke took last place and Horst had only played ten games for Fritz Langner's team . Together with Willi Schulz, he accepted an offer from Hamburger SV in the summer of 1965 and moved to the Hanseatic city for the round in 1965/66.

Hamburger SV, 1965 to 1969

In the early years of the Bundesliga, HSV was unable to build on the successful times of the Oberliga Nord , and for Horst, sixth place in 1968/69 under coach Kurt Koch was the best placement with the diamond carriers. From 1965 to 1969 he played 119 Bundesliga games for the North Germans. In the 1966/67 DFB Cup, however, after successes against Altona 93 , 1. FC Köln , Kickers Offenbach and Alemannia Aachen, he made it to the cup final on June 10, 1967 in Stuttgart against Bayern Munich, which the Hanseatic League 0: 4 lost. Since the Beckenbauer-Elf had already qualified as defending champions, the Hamburg team took part in the 1967/68 European Cup Winners' Cup. They surprisingly penetrated into the final after successes against Randers Freja , Wisła Krakau , Olympique Lyon (three games) and in the semifinals against Cardiff City . On May 23, 1968, AC Milan , which competed with Gianni Rivera , Karl-Heinz Schnellinger and Giovanni Trapattoni , deservedly won 2-0 against Hamburger SV in Rotterdam. In the 1968/69 season Horst played again in the international games in the Europa League predecessor trade fair cup against FC Metz , Slavia Prague and Hibernian Edinburgh .

In the summer of 1969 he ended his playing career. During his professional time in Hamburg, he worked as a deputy head of human resources at the then union-owned housing association Neue Heimat .
