Playing times
Second-rate regional league (1963–1974)
From 1963/64 to 1973/74, the Regionalliga West, together with the Regional Leagues North , Berlin , Southwest and South , was one of the five second-highest divisions in the Bundesliga . At that time it comprised the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia . Masters and runners-up took part in the promotion round to the Bundesliga.
Fourth class regional league in three seasons (2008–2012)
With the introduction of the 3rd league , the regional league was played in three seasons from the 2008/09 season (regional league north , west and south) . Thus, the Regionalliga West returned, but was now only fourth class. Their catchment area was North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland , so like the area of the Regionalliga West / Südwest from 1994 to 2000. In the 2008/09 season, the club BV Cloppenburg was incorporated into the west relay, although it should have been in the north have to play. This happened because only 18 clubs should play in all three seasons. The champions of the Regionalliga West rose directly to the 3rd division.
Fourth class regional league in five seasons (since 2012)
With the regional league reform in 2012, the regional league was increased to five leagues: North, Northeast, West, Southwest and Bavaria . As from 1963/64 to 1973/74, the catchment area of the Regionalliga West is limited to North Rhine-Westphalia. The champion of the Regionalliga West is qualified for the promotion round to the 3rd division .
