Season course

Before the season

Since the preseason was canceled prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and apart from the promoted SC Verl and the relegated SG Wattenscheid 09 and TuS Haltern (both voluntary retreat into the upper league) no other participant had to leave the league, the field of participants is 21 Clubs bigger than ever in the fourth-class Regionalliga West. Because in addition to the four promoters from the upper leagues, there was a relegated from the 3rd division with Preußen Münster . The WDFV endeavors to bring the number of participants back to the target size of 18 clubs in a timely manner, and has therefore decided to determine up to five relegated clubs. As of this season, the champions or the best team of the Regionalliga West eligible for promotion will no longer have to qualify in promotion games for the 3rd league , but will receive permanent direct promotion rights. For the first time, the length of the game suspension, for example due to a red card in the fourth-class regional league, is based on the number of games actually to be suspended instead of the number of weeks to be paused, as was previously the case.

The fourth-class Regionalliga West is not new territory for the new teams. The founding member of the Bundesliga Preußen Münster returned to the regional league after nine seasons in the third division . After a year in their respective major leagues, SV Straelen and SC Wiedenbrück are back. The FC Wegberg-Beeck occurs after two seasons in the Middle Rhine league again in the regional on. The former second division club Rot Weiss Ahlen managed to rise again after three seasons in the Oberliga Westfalen .

When asked about their favorites for promotion, all coaches from the participating clubs named Rot-Weiss Essen as their top favorite. Dortmund's U23 was the only team to be counted among the favorites by a majority of the trainers. An analysis of the market values by transfermarkt.de comes to a similar result: At the start of the season, the squads of Essen (3.28 million €) and Dortmund II (2.95 million) are rated the highest. This is followed by Münster (2.45 million), Gladbach II (2.23 million) and Rödinghausen (2.22 million).

After the last game of the preseason which provided Wuppertaler SV before the Wuppertal District Court a request for insolvency in self-administration . Due to the extensive changes to the DFB game regulations in response to the economic effects of the pandemic, the sanctions due to insolvency were mitigated, but according to §6 of the DFB game regulations and according to the transitional regulations according to §52 of the WDFV game regulations with the deduction of three points will be sanctioned in the 20/21 season.

First round

The first round should start on September 4, 2020 with the opening game of the reigning champions Rödinghausen against the relegated Preußen Münster .

Due to the Covid-19 situation , the "Ordinance on protection against new infections with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus" issued by the state government allows games to be played in front of up to 300 spectators, subject to compliance with other conditions - such as ensuring minimum distances and traceability of visitors.

After the 21st matchday, which should be played until December 21st, 2020, the winter break is planned.

Second half

The second half of the season should start on January 15, 2021. The last and 42nd matchday - if this is possible due to the Covid-19 situation - should take place by June 5, 2021.
