The long-time second division club SC Fortuna Köln returned to the regional league for the first time after 2013/14 after five seasons in the third division , while the 2016 West Champion , Sportfreunde Lotte , returned to the league after three years.

For the first time since the 2012/13 season , SV Bergisch Gladbach 09 played in fourth class again. The VfB Homberg was, however, the first time since 1965 again represented in the regional (as Homberger SV in the then second-rate Regional). The last time Homberg played a season in the fourth division in 2007/08 . As a newcomer, TuS Haltern was the 37th team to take part in the fourth-class Regionalliga West ; the last promotion to a fourth class league ( the then fourth class association league ) was the club in 1979. Schalkes U23 were back in the league after two years in the major league.

Almost all regional league coaches named Rot-Weiss Essen as their top favorite before the start of the season. More than half of the coaches also rated SV Rödinghausen as a championship favorite. Around half of the coaches also included the runner-up in Oberhausen and / or Dortmund's U23 at least among the expanded group of potential promoters. According to analyzes by the portal transfermarkt.de , Essen had the most valuable squad in the league with a total market value of 2.95 million euros as of August 1, 2019 . This was followed by Rödinghausen (€ 2.53 million), Gladbach II (€ 2.4 million) and Dortmund II (€ 2.38 million).

In the 2019/20 season, four changes per team were possible for the first time in the games of Regionalliga West .

First round

The season started on July 26, 2019 with the game Rot-Weiss Essen against Borussia Dortmund II (2: 1, 14,497 spectators).

At the end of August 2019, SG Wattenscheid 09 filed for insolvency . After the proceedings were opened on October 1, the responsible insolvency administrator announced on October 23, 2019 that the regional league team had stopped playing with immediate effect. According to the game rules of the WDFV and the DFB , SG Wattenscheid was the first to be relegated; all games that had already been played with Wattenscheider's participation were canceled.

Autumn champion was the SC Verl with 40 points.

Second half

The winter break began on December 16, 2019, SV Rödinghausen overwintered ahead of the autumn champions SC Verl in the table. The 22nd matchday opened on January 24, 2020. SV Rödinghausen, which was in first place at the time, announced on February 13th that it would not apply for a license due to the license conditions for the 3rd soccer league .

The last game day of the season was originally planned for May 16, 2020.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

The WDFV was because of COVID-19 pandemic on 13 March 2020 known gaming operations in the West Regional to 22 March set. Before the deadline expired, the association extended the suspension until April 19. At the beginning of April, the DFB announced the final decision of the 21 regional associations to suspend play from the regional league downwards until further notice.

At an extraordinary association day of the WDFV on June 20, 2020, it was decided to end the 2019/20 season with immediate effect. There were no relegated athletes, but the relegation of SG Wattenscheid 09, which was due to the voluntary withdrawal from gaming, persisted. A quotient calculation was decided to determine a final table; the quotient was obtained by dividing the winning points by the number of games played. SV Rödinghausen was determined to be champion and participant in the qualifying game for the first round of the DFB Cup 2020/21 based on the best quotient . Since SV Rödinghausen did not apply for a license for the 3rd league, SC Verl, who was second according to the quotient calculation, was reported as a participant in the promotion games to the 3rd league .

After the last game day

The two promotion games between the west representative SC Verl and the champions of the Regionalliga Nordost Lok Leipzig for the fourth promotion place in the 3rd division were originally planned for May 20 and 24, 2020, but were due to the corona epidemic on the 25th and 24th Scheduled June 30, 2020. The first leg in the Bruno-Plache-Stadion in Leipzig ended 2-2. Due to the corona situation in the Gütersloh district, the second leg could not be played in the Sportclub Arena , but took place on the Bielefelder Alm . With a 1-1 draw in the second leg, SC Verl secured promotion to the third division.

On June 25, 2020, Wuppertaler SV announced that it had filed for insolvency in self- administration with the Wuppertal District Court . The extensive changes to the DFB game regulations in response to the economic effects of the corona epidemic have eased the sanctions due to insolvency. The Wuppertaler SV could be sanctioned with 3 points deduction in the season 20/21 according to §6 of the game regulations of the DFB and according to the transitional regulations according to §52 of the game regulations of the WDFV .

On July 6, 2020, TuS announced that they would voluntarily withdraw to the Oberliga Westfalen for financial reasons .
