The football regional league season 1967/68 was the fifth season of the then second-highest division in German football .

Season overview

Kickers Offenbach made the leap into the Bundesliga for the first time after having failed several times in the promotion games . They were accompanied to the House of Lords by Hertha BSC , who managed to return after forced relegation in 1965.

The season was not a good season for the promoted from the 1st amateur league . Out of eleven teams, 1. FC Phönix Lübeck , BFC Alemannia 90 , Lüner SV , SC Fortuna Köln and SSV Jahn Regensburg, not even half managed to stay in the league. Newcomer SC Friedrichsthal had to make way for Bundesliga relegated Borussia Neunkirchen , as did founding member Karlsruher SC from the German elite class.

85 teams played in five regional leagues. The two best teams in each regional league at the end of the regular season played the two first division promoted teams in two five-team rounds. With the exception of the regional leagues southwest and south, in which the last three teams were affected, the last two in all leagues had to relegate to the 1st amateur league.

North

Season course

Defending champion Arminia Hannover, last year's runner-up Göttingen 05 and VfL Wolfsburg with their goalscorers Wilfried Kemmer and Wolf-Rüdiger Krause fought an exciting battle for the championship until the last matchday on May 12, 1968. On the penultimate matchday, May 5th, the leading Wolfsburg lost the home game against Göttingen with 1: 2 goals and on the final day had to watch as a free team, as the rivals from Hanover and Göttingen in their games against VfB Oldenburg and Sperber Hamburg passed them by. Arminia managed to defend the title with coach Hans Hipp with a 2-0 home win against Oldenburg and Göttingen with coach Fritz Rebell again won the runner-up with a 7-0 win against Sperber. Newcomer Phönix Lübeck surprised with sixth place and the talent Peter Nogly first attracted attention. Altona 93 and the second climber TuS Haste 01 relegated to the amateur camp. The list of goalscorers was led by Kemmer (19 / Wolfsburg), Heino Bachmann (16 goals / Barmbek-Uhlenhorst) and Krause (15 / Wolfsburg). For the round 1968/69 Helmut Heeren (VfB Oldenburg) came with his move to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga .

Promotion round to Regionalliga Nord

The amateur team of SV Arminia Hannover as third from Lower Saxony was not allowed to participate in the promotion round. The fourth in the table TuS Celle moved up. The amateur teams of Werder Bremen and Bremerhaven 93 were also not allowed to take part in the promotion round as Bremen champions or runners-up. The third SV Woltmershausen moved up.

    Season course

    Hertha BSC won the third championship in a row in Berlin in 1968, Tennis Borussia also won the third runner-up in a row. Hertha gave up only one point in their 15 home games and conceded only eleven goals in 30 games. The defensive around goalkeeper Volkmar Groß , the defenders Lothar Groß , Uwe Witt , Peter Enders , Ivan Šangulin and Tasso Wild was the guarantee for another title win. The team of coach Herbert Siegert , Tennis Borussia, was tied with 24: 6 points after the preliminary round with Hertha Zehlendorf - Helmut Faeder , Uwe Kliemann , Wolfgang Sühnholz - in second place, four points behind Hertha BSC. The team of coach Helmut Kronsbein had only received two minus points on October 15, 1967 by a 1: 2 defeat at the "Veilchen". Tennis Borussia - Lutz Steinert , Bernd Gersdorff , Georg Damjanoff , Michael Krampitz - scored the most goals in the round as runner-up with 108 goals and also set the top scorer in the Berlin Regionalliga with Horst Lunenburg (30 goals). Klaus Hinz from Wacker 04 followed in the list of goalscorers with 24 goals ahead of Manfred Eichholz (Spandauer SV), Manfred Kipp (Wacker 04) and Dieter Krafczyk from Hertha BSC with 23 goals each. The Neuköllner Sportfreunde and VfB Hermsdorf started their way to the amateur camp. The bottom of the table from Hermsdorf scored 9:50 goals in the 15 away matches and scored three points. The superior champions Hertha BSC played a 0-0 draw at VfB on March 24, 1968 in the second half of the season. For the 1968/69 round, Karl-Heinz Hausmann was signed by Wacker 04 for the Bundesliga promoted Hertha BSC for the Bundesliga .

    Season course

    The fight for the first two places to participate in the Bundesliga promotion round developed into a three-way battle between Bayer Leverkusen ( Hans Benzler , Leo Wilden , Helmut Röhrig , Peter Rübenach , Karl-Heinz Brücken , Helmut Richert , Friedhelm Strzelczyk ), Rot-Weiss Essen ( Fred-Werner Bockholt , Roland Peitsch , Heinz Stauvermann , Werner Kik , Herbert Weinberg , Helmut Littek , Egbert-Jan ter Mors , Willi Lippens ) and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen ( Wolfgang Scheid , Lothar Kobluhn , Franz Krauthausen , Dieter Brozulat , Friedhelm Dick , Dieter Hentschel ). Coach Theo Kirchberg led the red-blacks from the Ulrich Haberland Stadium, the tenth of the previous year, Bayer Leverkusen, surprisingly to the championship. On the last day of the match, the 3: 3 draw at Schwarz-Weiß Essen could not prevent the Bayer-Elf championship. Essen (trainer Erich Ribbeck ) and Oberhausen (trainer Werner Stahl) won their final games against Hamborn 07 and Fortuna Köln, respectively, but were only able to achieve a tie (RWE) and a point deficit (RWO) with Leverkusen. Coach Hermann Eppenhoff surprisingly led VfL Bochum into the DFB Cup final against 1. FC Köln. In the points round, Bochum had to be content with fifth place, but with a clear lead over the Bundesliga relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf, where the immediate return from BL could not be implemented with the new goalkeeper Wolfgang Fahrian and the new Vienna coach Ernst Melchior . The second Bundesliga relegated, RWE, on the other hand, was able to move into the promotion round as runner-up with newcomer Erich Ribbeck and the outstanding attacker Willi Lippens.

    In the list of goalscorers, Ernst Kuster from Arminia Bielefeld was at the top with 28 goals. Willi Lippens followed in second place with 26 goals. With 17 goals each, Rolf Kucharski from TSV Marl-Hüls and Jürgen Papies from Fortuna Düsseldorf shared third place in the scorers list. Of the RL promoters, Lüner SV ( Erhard Ahmann , Manfred Rüsing , Dieter Zorc ) reached the respectable eighth place, Fortuna Köln ( Peter Boers , Hans Löring , Friedhelm Otters ) held the class and VfB Bottrop ( Hans-Jürgen Fritsch , Karl -Otto Marquardt , Hans-Dieterippenhauer ) went back to the amateur camp immediately. VfB was accompanied by Westfalia Herne.

    Season course

    In the southwest, the village club SV Alsenborn asserted itself as the new master. After the eighth place last year, the team of the sporting leadership duo Fritz Walter and Otto Render surprised a lot and relegated the old top division teams of 1. FC Saarbrücken and FK Pirmasens to their places. In a play-off, TuS Neuendorf won the runner-up with a 3-2 win after extra time against Pirmasens and moved into the Bundesliga promotion round with Alsenborn. In the initial phase, Alsenborn lost two games - on August 12th with 0: 2 against Saar 05 and on September 17th with 1: 2 against the later relegated SC Friedrichsthal - but only one defeat on March 24th, 1968 at VfR Frankenthal with 1: 2 goals. In the end, the SVA had by far the best record with 24 wins and three draws and three defeats. The same applies to the goal difference with 87:21 goals. The championship team was made up of:

    Manfred Krei ; Roland Kirsch , Fritz Fuchs ; Erwin Rödler , Klaus Schmidt , Wolfgang Röhring ; Manfred Feldmüller , Lorenz Horr , Jürgen Schieck , Franz Schmitt , Josef Sattmann , Alfons Wachter .

    The runner-up from Koblenz was trained by Herbert Rappsilber and built on top performers Rudolf Krätschmer , Rudolf Stracke , Willi Kostrewa , Otto Jaworski , Hans Sondermann , Helmut Horsch , Werner Hölzenbein and Hans-Günter Funke . The three newcomers SC Friedrichsthal, Ludwigshafener SC and SSV Mülheim went back to the amateur camp.

    Season course

    The two front runners from the previous year - Offenbach won the championship in front of Hof in 1966/67 - also made the race at the southern tip in 1967/68. Bayern Hof with coach Heinz Elzner and the offensive pillars Wolfgang Breuer and Siegfried Stark won the championship in the Regionalliga Süd ahead of Kickers Offenbach by one point . The team from Bieberer Berg replaced coach Kurt Baluses with Kurt Schreiner on the home straight . On the first match day, August 13, 1967, Hof started the round with a 4-1 home win and the OFC with a 0-0 draw against SSV Reutlingen. The Hessians could rely on goalkeeper Rudolf Wimmer , defenders Ferdinand Heidkamp , Josef Weilbächer , Alfred Resenberg and defensive boss Hermann Nuber . The old trainers Richard Schneider , Georg Wurzer and Jenö Vincze came with their clubs SSV Reutlingen ( Theo Diegelmann , Heinz Kostorz, Rolf Schafstall , Manfred Kammal, Herbert Ammer, Günther Kasperski , Harald Braner ), Stuttgarter Kickers (Herbert Dienelt, Rolf Steeb , Helmut Fürther, Erich Schmeil , Rainer Eisenhardt, Dieter Schurr) and FC Schweinfurt 05 ( Kurt Dachlauer , Dieter Höller , Werner Rinass , Manfred Linz ) behind the two front runners in third, fourth and fifth. At VfR Mannheim, striker Franz Schäffner stood out with 27 goals and Robert Gebhardt came seventh with the four-leafed eleven from Fürth. The later master coach in Austria, Otto Barić , had to be content with Rüsselsheim not to have been drawn into relegation. Striker Kurt Haseneder could not get out of the rear midfield with Schwaben Augsburg and the team from Böllenfalltor, Darmstadt 98, was just able to avert relegation with the former Eintracht Frankfurt greats Erwin Stein and Dieter Stinka .

    On the last match day, May 12, 1968, FSV Frankfurt ( Reinhold Nedoschil , Erich Wolf , Walter Szaule ) was relegated from the league by the 0-1 home defeat on Bornheimer Hang against SV Waldhof Mannheim, as Jahn Regensburg ( Gerhard Faltermeier , Klaus-Peter Jendrosch , Alfred Kohlhäufl ) won their away game with 2-0 goals in Rüsselsheim. In addition to the Hessians, the relegation also hit the two promoted TSG Backnang and SV Wiesbaden.

    Promotion round to the Regionalliga Süd

    Rot-Weiss Frankfurt as champions of the 1st amateur league Hessen and ESV Ingolstadt as champions of the Bayernliga rose directly to the Regionalliga Süd. The champions of the 1st amateur leagues: South Baden, North Baden, North Württemberg and Black Forest-Bodensee played the third promoted team in a promotion round. The champions from North Baden made the rise: VfL Neckarau .

    Promotion to the Bundesliga in 1968/69

    Course of the promotion round

    On the first match day, May 18, 1968, the South runner-up Kickers Offenbach was able to watch the rivals Neuendorf, Hanover, Tennis Borussia and Leverkusen start the round. The 4-2 success of the West Champion Leverkusen in Berlin was remarkable when the Bayer-Elf managed to win in front of 25,000 spectators after a 2-1 half-time lead by Tennis Borussia in the second half. On the second match day (May 22), the Nuber-Elf started with a 1-1 draw at their supposed main rival Leverkusen in the promotion round. With 6: 2 points, the team from Bieberer Berg led the table before Leverkusen with 5: 3 points after the Hinserie. With the decisive 2-1 home win on June 9th against the men around Leo Wilden , the OFC laid the foundation for promotion. The 2: 3 final defeat on the last match day in Hanover against the knocked-off Arminia on June 23 was irrelevant.

    Promotion to the Bundesliga in 1968/69

    Course of the promotion round

    Hertha BSC, who was forcibly transferred to the Regionalliga Berlin in 1965 for violating the statute of licensed players, managed to return to the Bundesliga in a sporting way at the third attempt in the promotion round in 1968. The start brought on May 18, 1968 a 2-2 draw against the supposedly toughest rival Rot-Weiss Essen in front of 33,000 spectators in the stadium on Hafenstrasse . RWE led 2-0 after 50 minutes , but coach Helmut Kronsbein's team managed to equalize with goals from Ivan Šangulin and Werner Ipta . After the third matchday on May 26th, Lorenz Horr scored two goals for a 2-1 defeat in Ludwigshafen's Südweststadion against the Palatinate village club SV Alsenborn, but things didn't look good for Hertha. With the 2-0 home win on June 12th - goals by Tasso Wild and Lothar Groß - against Essen, Hertha got back on the path of promotion. The last two games were followed by a 3-2 success in Hof and finally on June 23, in front of 78,000 spectators in the Olympic Stadium, a 1-1 draw against Alsenborn and thus the Bundesliga return was 11: 5 points ahead of RWE with 9: 7 points completed.
