Erwin Stein (born June 10, 1935 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a former German football player who came to the German national football team in 1959 .

Career

National team, 1959

As a ten year old Erwin Stein started his career in the youth of SG Bornheim. Via the stopover at Olympia 07, he landed at SpVgg Griesheim 02 in 1954 . At the age of 24 he was appointed as a center forward by national coach Sepp Herberger and his assistant Georg Gawliczek for the game on April 15, 1959 in Enschede against Holland in the German amateur team. The fast and powerful striker fulfilled all expectations with two goals in the 2-0 victory. Due to the final round of the German football championship taking place on May 16, the national coach surprisingly nominated the Hessian amateur player for the national football team's line-up for the friendly game against Poland on May 20, 1959 in Hamburg . When the score was 0: 1 goals, Erwin Stein was substituted on in the 63rd minute, and in the 81st minute he equalized 1: 1, which also meant the final score. On May 27th he stormed for the second time in the amateur national team. In the 2-0 win against England in Siegen he was again celebrated as a two-time goalscorer. For the 50th anniversary of the Luxembourg Football Association, a game between a Belgian and a German selection took place on June 13, 1959. Belgium won 3-1 goals. Erwin Stein scored the goal for the DFB selection. In the final of the German soccer championship in 1959 , Eintracht Frankfurt and Kickers Offenbach faced each other on June 28, 1959 . Eintracht won in extra time with 5: 3 goals. Center forward Eckehard Feigenspan was a triple goal scorer for Frankfurt . Since Feigenspan switched to TSV 1860 Munich , the Eintracht presidium negotiated intensely with the courted striker from Griesheim 02. Stein signed a contract in Riederwald for the Oberliga Süd from the round 1959/60 and was therefore no longer usable for the German amateur national team . Since the qualifying games for the 1960 Summer Olympics were held against Finland and Poland in November 1959, this was a setback for the DFB's plans to participate in the Olympics. Erwin Stein played his first game in the Oberliga Süd on August 23, 1959 at the opening game with Eintracht Frankfurt against SpVgg Fürth . He contributed two goals to Eintracht's 5-3 success. His scoring qualities also came into play in the major league. National coach Sepp Herberger did not nominate the dangerous striker for the next international match against Switzerland on October 4, 1959 in Bern. Stein never received an invitation from the DFB again. He scored 24 goals in the 1959/60 league round and moved into the final on May 18, 1960 in Glasgow against Real Madrid with Eintracht in the European Cup . In terms of sport, his calling card was top notch - but his departure from the amateur national team was never forgiven by the national coach.

Eintracht Frankfurt, 1959–1966

In seven years with Eintracht, Erwin Stein played 342 games (including friendlies) and scored 267 goals. In the Oberliga Süd he came from 1959 to 1963 in 107 games on 75 goals. In 1960 he celebrated the triumphal procession to Glasgow in the final against Real Madrid and scored two goals against the legendary José Santamaría , known as "the wall" - between the 72nd and 75th minutes, the 2: 6 and the 3: 7 - in the 3: 7 defeat in the final. In 1961 and 1962 it was enough for the vice championship in the south twice and he played with Eintracht in the final round of the German soccer championship. In the 1960/61 season he was also top scorer of the Oberliga Süd with 24 goals.

In the Bundesliga he had two good rounds from 1963 to 1965. He left with the game on September 4, 1965 at Hannover 96 on the side of Jürgen Grabowski and Wolfgang Solz his farewell as an active player of Eintracht. From 1963 to 1966 he contributed 14 goals in 41 games in the new class for Hessen. In the DFB Cup , reaching the final on June 13, 1964 against 1860 Munich was the highlight. The “Löwen” won the final with 2-0 goals.

Following his athletic career, he ran a tobacco shop in Frankfurt-Griesheim with a lottery sales point.
