The SC Friedrichsthal is a football club from Friedrichsthal in Saarland . The first team currently plays (status: 2019/20 season) in the ninth-class Saarbrücken district league. Between 1959 and 1963, the first team played in the then second-rate II. Southwest Division and in the 1967/68 and 1969/70 seasons in the then also second-rate Regionalliga Südwest.

history

On July 8, 1893, the Friedrichsthal Gymnastics Club was founded, which in 1902 was renamed TV Friedrichsthal . On October 26, 1919, the club merged with the sports and games club "Kolonie" Friedrichsthal to form TuSpVgg Friedrichsthal . On May 2, 1920, FC Viktoria Friedrichsthal joined the club and formed its football department, which became independent on January 23, 1921 as SV 1919 Friedrichsthal . The remaining club was renamed TV 1893 Friedrichsthal in 1924 and merged with SV 1919 Friedrichsthal to VfL Friedrichsthal in 1935 . On February 17, 1946, the name was changed to SC Friedrichsthal . The association has had its current name since January 17, 1967.

In 1953 the team was promoted to the Saarland amateur league . In 1959 the Friedrichsthalers became champions and were promoted to the 2nd division. The club achieved its best placement in the 1961/62 season with third place. A year later, the team missed qualification for the Regionalliga Südwest . In 1967 and 1969 the Friedrichsthaler champions of the amateur league and made it to the regional league. Both times the relegation followed after a season. In the 1975/76 season, SC qualified for the DFB Cup by winning the Saarland Cup, which was held again for the first time since 1953, in 1975 (4-3 final victory over SV Hasborn) . In the first round, the Friedrichsthalers were defeated by SC Herford away 1: 3.

After several years of mediocrity in the amateur league, SC 1978 narrowly missed qualifying for the Oberliga Südwest . Until 1991, the Friedrichsthaler played in the now fourth-class Saarland Association. There was a return only between 1994 and 1996. In 1999 the team was relegated to the district league for the first time, but managed to get promoted again immediately. In 2007 followed the championship in the regional league and promotion to the association league, which since 2009/10 has been the top division in Saarland football (nationwide 6th level) under the name Saarlandliga .

After the 2017/18 season, in which the first team in the Saarland League finished 9th in the table, the club decided after the death of the previous patron Jürgen "Charly" Braun for financial reasons to start a new sport and voluntarily rose by three divisions the ninth class district league Saarbrücken from.
