Club history

The Herford SC 07/08 in turn merged on June 16, 1972 with the SuS 1928 Herford club to form today's SC Herford. All club names of the regular and predecessor clubs are still part of the official club name of the SC Herford, the Sport-Club Herford - VfB Unity 07 / Spielvereinigung Union 08 / Herford Sport-Club 07/08 / Spiel und Sport 1928 - e. History of the football department

Structural development of the SC Herford

The previous clubs

The most successful parent club of today's SC Herford was the SpVgg Union 08 Herford . In 1922, the team rose to the regional league of Westphalia, at that time the top division. Fifth place in the 1927/28 season was the most successful result of this era. In 1933 Union was penultimate and missed qualification for the newly established Gauliga Westfalen by far. In the following years, the team played with average success in the second-rate district league of East Westphalia. For the 1944/45 season , the club was appointed to the Gauliga. There, however, the team only played one game against Arminia Bielefeld , which ended 2-2.

After the Second World War , it was not until 1952 that Union Herford was promoted to the state league, which was the highest amateur league in Westphalia at the time. In the 1955/56 season Union and SVA Gütersloh were tied first. Since Gütersloh won the playoff in the neutral Brackwede 1-0, the Union missed participation in the Westphalia Championship. Union Herford qualified for the newly introduced two-track association league , from which the club was relegated as bottom of the table in 1957 . After rising again two years later, the Union was able to hold the league until 1964. The greatest success was fourth place in 1962 . The direct resurgence was missed and the club was also in danger of relegation in the regional league. The 1967/68 season ended the team in tenth place and then merged with VfB Unity in 1907 to form Herford SC 07/08 . Under this name, the team was runner-up in 1971, one point behind TuS Sennelager , before the HSC was knocked off last a year later.

The SuS Herford association, founded in 1928, was always in the shadow of the Union . In 1934 the team was promoted to the then second-class district league East Westphalia and immediately took third place. After the Second World War, the club played in the national league in the early 1960s. After a runner-up in 1964 behind SV Brackwede , the team slipped further and further down the table and in 1972 was only able to hold the class after a deciding round together with TuRa Löhne against VfL Schildesche . The VfB unity Herford again hovered mostly between district and county class. In 1960, the team was on the verge of promotion to the regional league, but lost the game for the championship against FT Dützen with 1: 3.

Fusion and professional football (1972 to 1981)

Despite numerous concerns, the Herford SC 07/08 and SuS Herford merged to form SC Herford on June 16, 1972. The first years were successful in terms of sport. In the first season under the new name, the team was one point ahead of SV Porta Neesen national league champions and returned to the association league. After the runner-up in 1974, the SC Herford finished the 1974/75 season tied with Arminia Gütersloh. The Gütersloher won both playoffs for the relay championship.

A year later , Herford became champions of its season and prevailed in the finals of the Westphalia championship just 3: 1 and 2: 1 against SV Holzwickede . In the following round of promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga North, the team met SV Arminia Hannover and SC Union 06 Berlin . With a 5-0 win on the last day of the match in Berlin, SC Herford secured second place and rose. The team benefited from Borussia Dortmund's promotion to the Bundesliga , which prevented possible playoffs against Bonner SC .

The start of the second division season 1976/77 went well. A 3-1 win over SG Wattenscheid 09 was followed by a 1-0 win at Bayer 05 Uerdingen . On the first two game days, SC Herford led the table. The specialist magazine Kicker described the SC as “Herford's best advertising medium” and reported that the newcomer was “extremely enthusiastic”. During the entire season, the team was never in acute danger of relegation and welcomed an average of 6,934 spectators at home games. The 5-0 win over Wacker 04 Berlin is still the highest second division win in the club's history.

After a bad start to the second half of the season, SC Herford found itself in a relegation battle a year later . After a series of six wins in seven games, the team still drew hope of relegation. The highlight was the 2-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld on the fourth from last game day. In front of 17,000 spectators, the SC brought Arminia the first derby defeat against an East Westphalian club in the 2nd Bundesliga with goals from Wolfgang Flüshöh and Manfred Wehmeier . On the last day of the match, Herford did not get more than 0-0 at home against Alemannia Aachen . The direct competitor VfL Osnabrück also achieved a goalless draw at Bayer 05 Uerdingen. The goal difference, which was one goal better, secured Osnabrück relegation, while Herford had to relegate.

With one point ahead of TuS Schloß Neuhaus , SC Herford was the first champion of the Oberliga Westfalen and returned to the 2nd Bundesliga. After another good start to the 1979/80 season, the team finished in the top three by match day 10. After a 0-1 home defeat against Arminia Bielefeld on matchday 32, the Herford team slipped to a relegation zone. A 3-2 victory over Hannover 96 could not prevent the sporting relegation. Since DSC Wanne-Eickel voluntarily returned its license for financial reasons, Herford remained in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The 1980/81 season was about qualifying for the single-track 2nd Bundesliga. With the Maltese national goalkeeper John Bonello and the later Finnish national player Vesa Mars , two foreign players were signed for the first time. For much of the season, the team stayed in the middle of the table, before a series of nine games without a win led to it slipping to 16th place. The single-track 2. Bundesliga was missed by lengths and SC Herford said goodbye to professional football.

Amateur football (1981 to 2001)

After relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga, the club had to struggle with major financial problems, so that a return was out of the question. Since 1976, the Heidapel Group, in the person of Managing Director Hans Heidemann, has been the club's shirt sponsor. After the Heidapel group collapsed, the club lacked budgeted funds, so that the team had to wait months for the agreed bonuses and travel expenses. The magazine “ Fußball-Woche” reported on January 4, 1982 that Hans Heidemann, who was also the head of the soccer department at SC Herford, was arrested by the Bielefeld public prosecutor's office for deliberate bankruptcy .

In the first few years in the Oberliga Westfalen, the team took placements in the middle of the table. In the Westphalia Cup in 1983, the Herford team lost the final against Rot-Weiss Lüdenscheid with 0-2 after extra time . Instead, the SCH prevailed 3-1 against 1. FC Paderborn a year later . After a sixth place in the league season 1983/84 and an eighth place a year later, he was relegated to the association league in 1986 . Also in the first four years in the association league, the SC Herford fought against relegation. In 1988 the team had three points ahead of the first relegation place at the end of the season. Two years later there were only two of them.

After a period of consolidation, the team reached third place in the 1992/93 season. With the introduction of the four-track regional league , there was an increased promotion in the 1993/94 season. The first four of both league seasons were allowed to move up to the top division. Herford missed the chance as sixth in the table with two points behind the fourth Blau-Weiß Wewer . After further years in the midfield of the association league, he returned to the league in 1999. The Herford team were initially champions of their association league relay, but then slipped back to second place due to a subsequent game rating in favor of Prussia Lengerich . Thanks to a decision at the Green Table , the Herford team were allowed to rise anyway.

In terms of sport, the team was successful and at the end of the 1999/2000 season finished fourth as the best climber. Despite the success, an average of just under 300 viewers watched the home games in the major league. The club had fallen behind the hockey club Herford EC in terms of the public's favor . Due to financial problems, the SC Herford had to let go of some top performers for the 2000/01 season , so that at the end of the season only the third from last place was achieved, which was accompanied by relegation.

Decline and Present (since 2001)

The club stayed in the association league for four years before SC Herford was unfortunately relegated to the national league in 2005. Despite a 1-0 win at Hammer SpVg on the last match day, Herford had the worst goal difference behind the tied teams of SpVgg Vreden and SC Wiedenbrück 2000 and had to relegate. A year later, the SCH gambled away in the regional league on the last day of the game with a 1: 2 defeat at SV Avenwedde , so that the Herford team had to compete in the regional league for the first time in 2006. With eleventh place in the 2006/07 season, the club reached its sporting low point.

In the 2007/08 season, the club was able to celebrate the championship in the district league and returned to the state league. In autumn 2009, the club made headlines when it signed ex-professional Georg Koch . As fourth in the 2011/12 state league season, direct promotion to the Westphalia League was just missed. After a 2-0 win over TSV Witten-Stockum and a 1-0 win over Rot-Weiß Horn , the team reached the final of the promotion round to the Westphalia League against TSV Marl-Hüls . Here the Marler prevailed 2-0.

Also in the following season 2012/13 a possible promotion was just missed. On the last day of the match, the Herford team took the lead at SC Bad Salzuflen in the last minute of the game and were second. Herford's rival VfB Fichte Bielefeld scored the winning goal at Spvg Steinhagen in stoppage time . As a result, Fichte moved up to second place and rose via relegation. A year later, on the third to last game day, a 3-0 win over SC Peckeloh made it into the Westphalia League. In the 2014/15 season, the Herford team secured fourth place with a 3-0 win against VfL Theesen on the last day of the match .

After the Herford was able to establish itself in the Westphalia League and always achieved single-digit positions in the table, the team slipped into the relegation battle during the 2017/18 season. Tim Daseking took over as coach and led the team to seventh place with six wins in a row.

In the 2018/19 season Daniel Keller became the new coach of the first team. After a furious first half of the season, a temporary lead in the table and only one defeat at the later champions Prussia Münster II , a weak second half of the season stopped the promotion dreams. In the end, despite the strong scoring of the two new strikers Todte (17 goals) and Nemtsis (15 goals) and the re-engagement of ex-Armine Christian Müller, only the 10th place and Daniel Keller was dismissed at the end of the season. For the 2019/20 season, the former Rödinghausen-based Ihsan Kalkan will take over the sports club.

SC Herford has qualified for the DFB Cup eight times . The team was eliminated four times in the first and four times in the second round. A year later the first victory could be achieved when Herford defeated SC Friedrichsthal at home with 3-1. In the second round, after a 4-0 defeat at SG Wattenscheid 09, the end followed. It was also the Herford's highest cup defeat. The highest victory was achieved in the 1977/78 season. After a 2: 2 after extra time at Wuppertaler SV , SC Herford was able to win the replay on its own place 3: 0.
