64 teams take part in the men's Westphalia Cup. The Westphalian teams that played in the 3rd division or the regional division in the preseason are automatically qualified . The remaining teams qualified via the district cup competitions. Each district association sends one to four teams to the Westphalia Cup, depending on their size. The number of clubs belonging to the district association is used as a measurement basis. Dortmund as the largest district association has a quota of four places. Second teams have not been eligible to participate since 2007.

New qualification regulations came into force for the 2014/15 season. The field of participants remains unchanged at 64 teams, whereby the Westphalian third and regional leagues are automatically qualified. What is new is that the teams that have occupied places two to six in the Oberliga Westfalen , as well as the champions of the two Westphalia league seasons, the four regional league seasons and the twelve regional league seasons are also qualified. Then there are the 30 district cup winners. The remaining places go to the circles that most men's teams report in play in the regional leagues.

The Westphalia Cup will be played in a knockout system . There is one game in each round. When a game is tied after 90 minutes, the game is two 15-minute extended . If after that still no decision has been made, a penalty shoot-out follows . The games of the first round are drawn by lots, the rest of the game is based on a seeding list. In the games at the district level and the first and second round at the association level, the lower class team has home rights. In the further rounds at association level, only the district league teams always have home rights. If two teams from the same league level play against each other, the team drawn first has a home game. From the semi-finals onwards, the venues are determined by the association.
