The Hamburg Cup has been organized by the Hamburg Football Association since 1951/52 .
The cup is currently being held under the name LOTTO -Pokal , after the long-term sponsor, LOTTO Hamburg, had previously supported the cup, based on the respective in-house betting offers, under the names Oddset -Pokal and Toto -Pokal . The last name change took place in 2019 when LOTTO Hamburg stopped offering the Oddset bet as a sports bet for economic reasons. The names HFV-Pokal or simply Pokal are also common today .

The winner of the Lotto Cup has automatically qualified for the DFB Cup since 1974 . The title holder of the 2019/20 season is Eintracht Norderstedt , who won the final against TSV Sasel on August 22, 2020.

history

The mode of competition changed constantly. In the first few years, the cup was held without a final, as several clubs were able to reach the North German Cup (which served as the "preliminary round" for the DFB Cup ) and a final was not necessary to determine these clubs - this is the reason why there is even for many seasons no official winner of the competition. Exceptions to this rule were the seasons 1954/55, in which ASV Bergedorf 85 won the cup, and 1955/56, when Borussia Harburg won the final in front of 600 spectators. In the following years, the execution of the tournament again saw no final. It was not until almost 20 years later that a final was held again in 1973, which SC Poppenbüttel won.

Since 1974, the winners of the respective HFV Cup events no longer qualify for the first round of the North German Cup, but directly for the DFB Cup. Since 1981/82, every cup season has been played with a final, as the number of participants in the DFB Cup has been greatly reduced and only one Hamburg club has been admitted to the DFB Cup. Nothing has changed in this mode to this day.

mode

Today the HFV-Pokal consists of eight rounds (including the final), whereby there are occasional byes in the first rounds in order to have an even number of clubs in the competition from the second round at the latest. From round 1 to 3, the cup competition is divided into four groups (South / East, Bergedorf / East, North / Middle and West / Pinneberg / Uetersen) in order to save the clubs high travel costs, which also means that certain clubs are in The first rounds are hardly challenged due to the weak opponents in their group, while in other groups higher-class teams can be eliminated early on.

The lower-class club always has home rights in the cup competition. An exception to this is the final, which is usually played on neutral ground.

Attendees

All clubs that are members of the Hamburg Football Association are eligible to start at the Hamburger Pokal. No minimum league is necessary for this (so clubs from the lowest league can also register for the Oddset Cup) and the club does not even have to play actively in the league (for example, in the 1970s and 1980s, VfL Fosite from Helgoland , which member , regularly took part is in HFV, took part in the competition, although Fosite never played in the league). However, no Hamburg club is obliged to participate in the competition, so that sometimes clubs do not take part in the cup, although they are active in the league system.

Since the 2008/09 season, second teams are no longer eligible to compete in the Lotto Cup, as they can no longer qualify for the DFB Cup.
