The men's Southwest Cup has been held since the 1973/74 season and has been officially called the Bitburger Association Cup since the 2008/09 season . Participants in the men's association cup are the teams belonging to the SWFV in the 3rd division , the Regionalliga Südwest , the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar , the Verbandsliga Südwest , the regional leagues, the district leagues and a number of teams that qualify in the districts.
With the reorganization of the men's league system in summer 2008 (introduction of the 3rd division), second teams from men's professional clubs (first and second Bundesliga) are no longer allowed to participate in the DFB Cup. So in 2008 it was not the cup winner 1. FC Kaiserslautern II who took part in the DFB Cup, but the final opponent SV Niederauerbach-Zweibrücken . Since the 2009/10 season, second teams are no longer allowed to participate in the association cup.
The association cup winner qualifies as a participant of the association in the DFB Cup .
The record cup winner is 1. FSV Mainz 05 with 8 wins, 5 of which were won by the second team. The latter succeeded in one go from 2001 to 2005.
