Football Association Cup 2016/17

The participants of the 21 national associations of the DFB in the DFB-Pokal 2017/18 were determined via the football association cup 2016/17 . The winners of the association cups were entitled to participate in the first round of the DFB Cup. The three associations with the largest number of members, Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Westphalia, also sent a second participant. Thus 24 amateur clubs qualified for the national cup competition, 22 of them via the association cups. The second teams of the professional clubs (1st and 2nd Bundesliga) are not allowed to participate in the DFB-Pokal.

In Lower Saxony, the defeated cup finalist qualified for the DFB-Pokal in addition to the cup winners, in Bavaria the best team of the 2016/17 regional league season qualified for the first in addition to the winner of the association cup - unless it was the second team of a professional club Main round of the DFB Cup, in Westphalia, with the same restriction as in Bavaria, this is the winning team of the qualification game between the champions of Oberliga Westfalen 2016/17 and the best Westphalian team of Regionalliga West 2016/17 .

The finals of the national cups 2016/17 were played on Thursday, May 25, 2017 (Ascension Day) again on the so-called "Amateurs Final Day". ARD broadcast all final matches live in three consecutive conferences. The only exception was the cup final in Saxony, which was held on May 24, 2017.

¹The three state associations with the most men's teams in play (Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Westphalia) have two starting places. In addition to the cup winner, either the defeated cup finalist (Lower Saxony), the best-placed regional league team (Bavaria) or the winner in a qualifying game between the champions of the Oberliga Westfalen and the best-placed Westphalian team in the Regionalliga West (Westphalia) take part.

²Since MSV Duisburg, Holstein Kiel and 1. FC Magdeburg had already qualified for the DFB Cup via the 3rd league , the final opponents Rot-Weiss Essen, SV Eichede and VfB Germania Halberstadt had already qualified in advance.
