The 2016/17 season was the 13th season of the Regionalliga as the third highest division in women's football . 61 teams play in five groups for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga or against relegation to the association / upper league.

Holstein Kiel rose from the 2nd Bundesliga North to the Regionalliga, while VfL Jesteburg (Lower Saxony) and FC St. Pauli (Hamburg) rose from the subordinate leagues . Lower Saxony champion SV Union Meppen renounced the promotion.

Blau-Weiß Hohen Neuendorf and FFV Leipzig are relegated to the Regionalliga from the 2nd Bundesliga North . With the subsequent withdrawal of 1. FC Lübars from the 2. Bundesliga, Hohen Neuendorf remained in the second division. FSV Babelsberg 74 rose from the subordinate leagues . Since 1. FC Lübars did not register for the Regionalliga Nordost, the league will play with eleven teams in the 2016/17 season.
The FFV Leipzig stopped playing on April 12, 2017 and canceled its team. The NOFV has taken all games played out of the rating. The 1. FFV Erfurt and the FSV Babelsberg 74 did not apply for the 2017/18 season and are therefore determined to be relegated.

Promotion lap
Due to the withdrawal from Erfurt, no reports from Brandenburg, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt and to restore the target strength of 12 teams, the scheduled promotion round was omitted. Thus, the regional associations rose directly in the 2017/18 regional league season: RB Leipzig and Bischofswerdaer FV 08 (Saxony), SFC Stern 1900 (Berlin) and Rostocker FC (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania). The Brandenburg champions FC Stahl / 1. As a syndicate, FFC was not eligible for promotion.
