The VfL Bochum 1848 (officially: Verein für Leibesübungen Bochum 1848 Fußballgemeinschaft eV ) is a sports club from Bochum . The women's soccer department was created on July 1st, 2010 when the women's soccer department of TuS Harpen joined and SG Wattenscheid 09 took over the playing rights . The first team has been playing in Regionalliga West since its voluntary relegation in 2015 .

history

TuS Harpen

TuS Harpen was founded in 1908 as SpVg Harpen and in 1933 had to merge with the gymnastics club Jahn Harpen to form TuS Harpen. A women's team was reported for the first time in 1970, making the club the oldest women's soccer department in Bochum. In 1998, the team rose to the then third-class Association League Westphalia . Ten years later, after a 1-1 draw at Arminia Bielefeld, they were promoted to the Regionalliga West.

On July 1st, 2008 a cooperation with VfL Bochum began. With ten points behind the FFC Brauweiler Pulheim Harpen was runner-up in the 2008/09 regional league season. A year later, the team was three points behind champions 1. FFC Recklinghausen third. TuS Harpen produced two German national players with Annike Krahn and Petra Landers and one Turkish national player with Fatma Kara . Tanja Schulte became a coach in the Bundesliga. In February 2010 it was announced that VfL Bochum would take over the women's football department of TuS Harpen on July 1, 2010. Later the TuS Harpen reported a women's team to the Bochum district league again.

SG Wattenscheid 09

SG Wattenscheid 09 was founded on August 9, 1909 as BV 09 Wattenscheid and has had its current name since 1945. The women's football department was founded in 1973 and in 1994 made it into the then two-pronged Bundesliga . After the direct relegation, the team was twice in a row champions of the Regionalliga West , but missed promotion. In 2004 the Wattenscheiderinnen were one of the founding members of the 2nd Bundesliga.

Three years later, he was promoted to the Bundesliga again. Despite the commitment of the national player Kerstin Stegemann , the team stayed in the table cellar and was finally relegated last. Two years later, the Wattenscheiderinnen also relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga. The team did not play for the game at Werder Bremen . On April 9, 2010, SG Wattenscheid announced that it would close the women's football department on June 30, 2010 for financial reasons. The women's football department of VfL Bochum took over the playing rights of SG Wattenscheid 09 and the Wattenscheid players were advised to join VfL Bochum.

VfL Bochum 1848

Under the umbrella of VfL Bochum 1848, the team was runner-up in the Regionalliga West behind Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FFC Recklinghausen both in the 2010/11 season and the following season . It was not until 2013 that the Bochum women became champions with 17 points ahead of the Mönchengladbach women who had been relegated in the meantime and were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 2013/14 DFB Cup season , the team reached the round of 16 via the stations Karlsruher SC and SV 67 Weinberg , where after a 1: 3 defeat at Werder Bremen they were eliminated.

On October 1, 2014, VfL Bochum 1848 announced that they would be parting with women's football at the end of the 2014/15 season. The association hopes that this will save 120,000 euros annually . This step was sharply criticized by the VfL fans. The fan club, ourVfL.de , stated in an open letter that the decision of the board of directors “cannot be reconciled with the values of the association” and that “social responsibility is being trampled underfoot”. On October 20, 2014, it was decided at an extraordinary general meeting to keep the women's football department.

However, the club pulled the team back to the Regionalliga West. There the Bochum women were runner-up behind Borussia Bocholt in the 2017/18 season . Since June 20, 2018, the department has had a cooperation with the club FC Oerlikon Police Zurich from Switzerland , which includes a coach and player exchange.
