The Ruhrstadion ( officially Vonovia Ruhrstadion through name sponsorship ) is the urban soccer stadium in the Grumme district of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Bochum . It is the home ground of the football club VfL Bochum . The “pure” football stadium is located on Castroper Strasse immediately northeast of the city center . Since 2016 it bears the name of the German housing company Vonovia SE based in Bochum.

VfL and its predecessor clubs have been playing football here since 1911. VfL Bochum now has one of the most traditional competition venues in German professional football.

history

Sports field on Castroper Strasse (1911–1921)

In 1911, SuS Bochum 08 leased a meadow outside the city limits at that time. The meadow was colloquially called Dieckmanns Wiese after the landlord, Bauer Dieckmann . The first official soccer game on Castroper Strasse took place in front of 500 spectators on October 8, 1911 during the game between SuS 08 and VfB Hamm . Only after the First World War was the sports field converted into a stadium.

Stadium on Castroper Strasse (1921–1979)

The TuS 1848 Bochum , a fusion club, the 1919 from the pupils 1908 Bochum and the TV Bochum 1848 was, in 1921, built a stadium with seating for about 50,000 spectators at the Castroper road. For the first game in the new stadium, the Düsseldorfer SC 99 was a guest. At that time, the Bochum stadium was one of the most modern and largest football stadiums in Germany , so that on July 2, 1922, the German national football team welcomed the Hungarians here for a friendly match. In the 1920s and 1930s , the stadium on Castroper Straße was the home of the Gauligists of TuS Bochum 08 (emerged from TuS 1848 Bochum by clean divorce with TV Bochum 1848 on February 1, 1924) and Germania Bochum and was the venue several times of games of the West German soccer championship . Since the 1938/39 season of the Gauliga Westfalen , the stadium has been the home of VfL Bochum, a merger club that emerged on April 14, 1938 from TV Bochum 1848 , TuS 1908 Bochum and SV Germania Bochum 1906 .

In the 1950s , VfL built a grandstand with 2700 seats, 1300 of which were covered. After promotion to the Bundesliga in 1971 , the stadium also had to be adapted to the requirements of professional football. A floodlight system was required, which was used for the first time on October 7, 1972 in VfL's home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach . Similar to the neighbors from Dortmund with the Westfalenstadion and Gelsenkirchen with the Parkstadion , the Bochumers wanted to build a new stadium in the 1970s . However, the club did not get a permit for a new building, so the stadium on Castroper Strasse was finally rebuilt.

The renovation, during which the previous athletics facility was also removed, took place between March 1976 and July 1979 and was carried out in four stages of individual grandstand sections. VfL Bochum played in a construction site during the renovation. At the end of the 1975/76 Bundesliga season , the pitch on Castroper Straße was unusable due to the renovation. VfL Bochum had to move to other stadiums for the last seven home games of the second half of the season. Six times - the games against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2: 0), MSV Duisburg (1: 2), 1. FC Cologne (1: 0), Eintracht Frankfurt (5: 3), Hertha BSC (2: 0 ) and Karlsruher SC (4: 2) - VfL played in the stadium at Schloss Strünkede in Herne and once against FC Schalke 04 on April 2, 1976 in Dortmund's Westfalenstadion .

After the end of the renovation work, the stadium was inaugurated on July 21, 1979 under the new name Ruhrstadion Bochum with a game (3-0) against SG Wattenscheid 09 . The original capacity of the Ruhrstadion was 49,522 spectators. However, this capacity was reduced by numerous modifications. For example, before the 1997/98 season, the west stand, which was originally purely a standing room, was converted into a seating stand. The capacity for the 2012/13 season was 29,299, of which 16,174 were seated and 13,125 were standing.

The German national soccer team played three times in the Ruhrstadion during this period. In qualifying for the 1982 World Cup , she played against Finland (7: 1) on September 23, 1981 and played the two friendlies against Yugoslavia (1: 1) on May 11, 1986 and Ghana (6: 1) on April 14, 1993 .

CSKA Moscow played its home game in the 1992/93 UEFA Champions League against Glasgow Rangers on December 9, 1992 due to the weather conditions in Russia in the Ruhr Stadium.

VfL's first international home game took place on September 30, 1997 in the UEFA Cup (now known as the UEFA Europa League ) against the Turkish club Trabzonspor (5-3). With the win, VfL moved into the next round after a 1: 2 first leg defeat in Trabzon . With two UEFA Cup appearances so far ( 1997/98 and 2004/05 ) and a total of four home games, VfL has remained undefeated in competitive international matches in its own stadium.

Since August 2003, VfL Bochum has had a five-story stadium center behind the north stand of the Ruhrstadion. It offers space for the office, the junior department, the board, the team as well as for the care of around 1250 VIPs . On the ground floor of the stadium center there is a fan shop and a restaurant (“8zehn48”), in which it is possible to watch VfL Bochum's away games on a screen and several monitors .

On September 30, 2004 - at the UEFA Cup game (1: 1) against Standard Liège - the Ostkurve, the fan block of VfL supporters, was equipped with seats, which, however, were removed for normal league operations. This remained the only home game of the competition that season, as VfL were eliminated after the 0-0 first leg due to the away goals rule .

Rewirpowerstadion (2006-2016)

Since the beginning of the 2006/07 season , the stadium has borne the name of Rewirpower , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Bochum and other energy providers. The contract between the association and the company ran for five years and was extended from 2011 to 2016. As in comparable cases with other traditional names of stadiums and arenas , the renaming was criticized by the majority of the Bochum fan scene .

Bochum was the venue for the 2004 European Under-21 Championship , including the final. During the U-20 Women's World Cup in 2010 and the Women's World Cup in 2011 , the Ruhrstadion was the venue under the name “FIFA Women's World Cup Stadium Bochum” . In order to meet the FIFA standards, the stadium was renovated until 2011. The stadium center was also expanded on the occasion of the World Cup. The media center was created there, new rooms were created for the care of VIPs, and the rooms used by the players, for example for fitness and physiotherapy, were enlarged. From October 4th to 9th, 2011 VfL Bochum celebrated the anniversary week “100 years of football on Castroper Straße” .

After Rewirpower's sponsorship contract was not extended and expired on June 30, 2016, the venue was simply called Stadion Bochum for a few days from July 1, 2016 . At first it was not possible to find a new namesake.

Vonovia Ruhrstadion (since 2016)

On July 7, 2016, VfL Bochum announced at a joint press conference with Vonovia and the City of Bochum that the stadium will now bear the name of the Vonovia housing company in conjunction with the traditional name Ruhrstadion, which is popular with fans . The contract initially has a term of five years. On August 26, 2016, the north-west side of the stadium was the first of the four corners to be given the new name. The others followed.

architecture

The stadium body is supported by 38 sickle beams. Exposed concrete was used for the construction . The architectural planning was carried out by the Bochum municipal building department.

Herbert Grönemeyer

The musician Herbert Grönemeyer , who spent his childhood and youth in Bochum and also played football there, has been a member of the club since 2006 and is considered a “noble fan” of VfL . He always gives sold-out open-air concerts in the stadium. This has been the case so far in 1985, 1994, 1998, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015 and most recently in April 2019. One of the highlights of his appearances is always the song "Bochum" from his album 4630 Bochum . It enjoys cult status with VfL fans , is traditionally played at every home game of VfL Bochum in the stadium immediately before kick-off and contains the text line "Make every opponent wet with a one- two , you and your VfL." A direct reference to the club.
