In the USA they started with a narrow 1: 2 defeat against the defending champions from Norway , but in the two remaining group games the team was able to convince and made it to the quarter-finals. However , Russia lost 2-0 to China and narrowly missed qualifying for the 2000 Olympics due to Sweden's last-minute goal in their 3-1 defeat against Norway .

At the 2001 European Championships, the Russian women were eliminated from the preliminary round with just one point. At the 2003 World Cup they reached the quarter-finals again, but lost 7-1 to eventual world champions Germany .

In qualifying for the EM 2005, Russia failed in the play-off games to Finland, for the 2007 World Cup , after two defeats against Germany, they could not qualify.

For the European Championship 2009 Russia was able to prevail in the third qualifying round after two games (3-2 in Scotland and 1-2 at home) against Scotland and qualify for the European Championship.
