history

Roman and Slavic settlements

Anger was settled by residents of the Roman Empire in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD . In the second half of the 6th century the Slavs invaded Styria as a ethnic group . The Feistritz river flowing through Anger means 'raging brook' and indicates a Slavic settlement.

Waxenegg Castle, church in Anger and market rights

Waxenegg Castle (today: Waxenegg Castle Ruins ) was first mentioned in a document in 1217 as "Wesseneck" and is the earliest documented evidence of the entire area around Anger and the upper Feistritztal.

Anger itself was first mentioned in a document in March 1364. A few years later in 1379 the church in Anger received parish rights. The Church itself is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Andreas . Anger was first referred to as a market in 1389 .

Steinpeißhaus (Freihaus) zu Anger, Vierzehn-Nothelfer-Kirche

The Freihaus Anger ( Stainpeißhaus, also Steinpeisshaus ), which can still be visited today, is named after the owners, the von Steinpeiss family. They were once ministries of those von Stubenberg (noble family) , later barons and counts. The house was first named in 1351, according to the plaque hanging on the house. In 1477 the Hungarians destroyed the house. In 1507 it came to the barons of Teuffenbach zu Mayerhofen, who rebuilt it from 1591 to 1617. In 1807 it came into the possession of the von Gudenus (noble family). In 1988 the renovation and revitalization of the Stainpeißhaus took place.

The second church in Anger, the Vierzehn-Nothelfer- Church, was probably built before the Reformation , as the date carved into the west portal suggests it.

Basic subservience and its abolition

In 1556 there were 23 houses in Markt Anger. In 1650 there were 18 different professions in Markt Anger such as B. Lederer, linen weaver and potter, baker, draper, blacksmith. In 1663, Waxenegg, together with the two castles and subjects, came into the possession of the barons and later counts of Webersberg, who held the castle and rulership for a century. The Werbersberg family ultimately died out. Thereafter, Johann Graf Khevenhüller-Metsch acquired the Waxenegg estate and relocated the administration to Thannhausen.

The rule of Waxenegg changed at the beginning of the 19th century. After Karl August Fürst von Brentzenheim became the owner of the estate in 1799, Ferdinand Baron von Gudenus acquired both Waxenegg and the Steinpeißhaus in Anger in 1806 .

In 1848 the abolition of basic subservience took place, peasants and citizens became personally free owners of their property. The administration was taken over by newly created local congregations. The village and market judges became community leaders and mayors.

Associations and culture

In 1888 the volunteer fire brigade Anger was founded, in 1897 the "Angerer Musikverein". Both associations still exist today.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Anger became known as a summer resort, which was visited by many guests, especially from Hungary. The Hungarian musician and composer Béla Bartók , who stayed in Anger in 1921, was one of the most prominent holiday guests .

In 1997 the Austrian football legend Toni Polster went on vacation to the community.

In 1911 the Feistritztalbahn was put into operation and the region was thus opened up to traffic.

Large community

On January 1, 2015, the surrounding communities of Baierdorf bei Anger, Feistritz bei Anger and Naintsch merged with Anger to form a new large community. This increased the area of the municipality from 1.97 km² to 53.84 km². The population increased from 829 to 4,126 inhabitants. In terms of area and population, Anger is in 6th place in the Weiz district.
