history

The place is mentioned in 1340 as in the Roeten. The abolition of the manorial lords took place in 1848. The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850. From 1922 there was lignite mining on site. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark. On July 26, 1944, an American Boeing B-17 was shot down by German fighter planes , killing five crew members.

From 1945 to 1955 Ratten was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria. In 1960 the last tunnel, the “peace tunnel”, was closed. The former mining village is now a place for vacation and relaxation.

October 2014, by expanding to 21 wind turbines, the wind farm on the Rattener Alm / on the Steinriegel mountain (in front of the one in Oberzeiring ) becomes the largest in a high-alpine location. Wienenergie has an 85% share in the Steinriegel 1 wind farm from 2005, which generates 34 gigawatt hours of annual electricity from 10 wheels . The 11 wheels of the Steinriegel 2 wind farm (45 GWh / a) belong entirely to Wienergie.

Municipal council

The council of Ratten consists of a total of 15 members. In the meantime, the FPÖ could hardly change its share of the vote of around 5% and therefore missed out on the municipal council for the second time in a row .

coat of arms

AUT rats COA.jpg

By resolution of the Styrian state government, Ratten has had the right to use the municipal coat of arms since May 1, 1975.

Description of the coat of arms : "In a shield split from silver to green by a wave cut, three green conifers in front, behind the silver mine symbol over three (1: 2) silver balls."

The coat of arms was designed by the then director of the Ratten secondary school, Johann Allmer. The wavy line in the middle of the coat of arms symbolizes the Feistritz river, which characterizes the valley landscape. The three conifers are supposed to represent the abundance of forests in the municipality. The mine symbol reminds of the brown coal mining that took place until 1960 . The three spheres are the symbol of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the parish church of Ratten.
