history

There is evidence of Celtic settlements from the La Tène period (5th - 1st century BC), in particular the Celtic princely grave on the outskirts of Waldalgesheim , the finds of which are in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn .

The first documentary mention in the Lorsch Codex comes from the year 790 (or possibly 780) with “in pago Nachgowe, in Alagastesheim” (“in Nahegau, in Waldalgesheim”) on the occasion of a donation to the Lorsch monastery .

The original name of Waldalgesheim was Algesheim . The name researcher Albrecht Greule explains that by adding the forest name in the place name to the name of Algesheim ( Gau-Algesheim ), also in the Mainz-Bingen district, a distinction should be made. Apparently, according to Greule, the male personal names Alagast or Alagwin are used as meaning for the place name , in the sense of "home of Alagast" or "home of Alagwin".

When American troops moved into Waldalgesheim at the beginning of March 1945, the community acquired a relative importance for the victorious powers. Due to the strategically good location, the attack on the neighboring town of Stromberg was planned from there, the capture of which had to precede that of Bad Kreuznach.

On November 7, 1970, the previously independent community of Genheim was incorporated.
