Hanns Geier (born February 25, 1902 in Waldalgesheim ; † 1986 ) was a German racing driver .

Career

Geier began his racing career in motorcycle racing in the 1920s . He later switched to automobile racing, competed in Amilcar and - together with August Momberger  - in Bugatti in various races and worked full-time as a car salesman at Daimler-Benz AG . In May 1933, at the age of 31, he was appointed as a young and test driver in the driving department of Daimler-Benz . In the seasons 1934 and 1935 he was reserve driver there. At the Grand Prix of Germany in 1934 on the Nürburgring - Nordschleife vultures got his chance. The regular pilot Manfred von Brauchitsch was injured in an accident during free practice and substitute driver Ernst Jakob Henne was absent due to illness. Geier got the chance to pilot the third works W-25 at a Grand Prix alongside Rudolf Caracciola and Luigi Fagioli . After 25 laps and almost five hours, he finished the race as the last driver to be classified in fifth place.

In the 1935 season, the 184 cm tall Geier with a W 25 with a streamlined body retired from the AVUS race in May and finished seventh at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. At the Swiss Grand Prix in 1935 on the fast Bremgarten Railway near Bern , Hanns Geier had a serious accident. He lost control of his car during training and crashed into the timekeeper box at around 240 km / h. Geier was taken to hospital in critical condition and survived the accident, but could no longer contest races. Hermann Lang took his place in the team . After his recovery he worked in the racing department of Daimler-Benz AG until it retired from motorsport as a result of the serious accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1955 as a timekeeper and assistant to racing director Alfred Neubauer .
