Gau-Bischofsheim is a municipality with around 2100 inhabitants in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim .

geography

Geographical location

Gau-Bischofsheim is a wine village on the southern outskirts of Mainz and borders Harxheim to the west . Other neighboring communities are Bodenheim and Lörzweiler . The village is called "Bischem" among the inhabitants. The close proximity to Mainz and the sometimes excellent location of the vineyards have shaped the place. The vineyard area is 79 hectares. The prince-bishops of Mainz had their wineries here from time immemorial. Some of the wineries bear witness to this tradition. In recent times the proximity of Frankfurt , Wiesbaden and Mainz has led to the expansion of Gau-Bischofsheim.

climate

The location of the village at the foot of the intersection of the eastern and southern slopes of the last ascent of the Rhine terrace ensures a pleasant, sunny climate with below-average rainfall, without being affected by the disadvantages of insufficient air circulation in the Rhine basin. From Gau-Bischofsheim you have a good view of Frankfurt am Main and the Odenwald . The slope in the north and west protects against harsh winds and guarantees a good wine.

history

Due to the fact that it has the same name as the nearby Bischofsheim am Main, it is difficult to assign early evidence. A donation to the Lorsch Monastery in the 8th century is considered certain . Gau-Bischofsheim was first mentioned in a document in 769.

The place name suggests that the community was owned by the Archbishop of Mainz. In later centuries, almost exclusively churches from Mainz had properties in Gau-Bischofsheim. The current coat of arms was first mentioned in 1651. In 1801 Gau-Bischofsheim came into French possession and was incorporated into the Donnersberg department. In 1816 the then heavily indebted community came to the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt . Gau-Bischofsheim has belonged to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since the end of the Second World War . In the course of an administrative reform , the place became part of the newly formed Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim.

After Gau-Bischofsheim had around 500 inhabitants at the end of the war, this number doubled by 1973. Today (as of 2018) more than 2100 people live in the community.

Buildings

  • In the center of the village is the Unterhof, a venerable former farm estate, which today houses the municipal administration, the community center and the Unterhofkeller. The inner courtyard, protected by a huge, ancient oak, offers an ideal setting for summer festivals and cultural events.
  • A special gem in the parish church is the famous Geissel organ by Johann Peter Geissel , the oldest organ in the Mainz diocese , which was in the church of St. Christoph in Mainz until 1773 . Regular organ concerts with international artists are among the cultural highlights of village life.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

  • The next motorway junction is Mainz-Hechtsheim West on the federal motorway 60 about 6 kilometers away.
  • From September 28, 1896 to May 31, 1985, the Amiche (Alzey-Bodenheim) railway ran through Gau-Bischofsheim. Today the tracks have been dismantled and the Amiche cycle path has been laid there. The cycle path signposted as the Amiche cycle path is only partially identical to the original route of the railway line. The cycle path between Bodenheim and Undenheim is most similar. From Undenheim, however, the signposted route leads over the former Valtinche railway line to Nierstein. To get back to the starting point in Bodenheim from there, the route is identical to the Rheinterrassen Cycle Path and the Rhine Cycle Path .

However, if you want to stay on the correct route of the Amich, you have to follow the signs for the Selztal cycle path to Alzey from Undenheim .

The station building in Gau-Bischofsheim has been used as a youth club since 1985. Public transport is now served by the ORN with line 660 between Mainz and Alzey .
