Bodenheim is a municipality in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate with around 7,700 inhabitants . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim and is its administrative seat. According to state planning, Bodenheim is designated as a basic center.

geography

Bodenheim is located in Rheinhessen, about 8 km south of Mainz (city center) on the edge of the Rhine-Main area . The community is strongly influenced by viticulture. Numerous wineries and taverns invite you to enjoy wine.

The following cities and communities (named clockwise, starting in the north) border on Bodenheim: the state capital Mainz with its districts Hechtsheim and Laubenheim , the Trebur district of Astheim on the opposite Hessian bank of the Rhine, Nackenheim , Lörzweiler and Gau-Bischofsheim , all belonging to the Bodenheim community.

history

The village, which dates back to Franconian founding, was first mentioned in a document when a vineyard was donated to the Fulda monastery by the Bodenheimer Rantulf in 754. 23 Bodenheim donations to the Lorsch monastery attest to the large amount of land the monastery had there. The first mention in this series of donations begins with document 1340 of March 11, 767, when Helmerich donated a riding court with farm property to Abbot Gundeland under King Pippin the Younger .

The ore monastery of Mainz , the Mainz cathedral chapter , the Mainz monasteries of St. Alban , St. Johann and St. Stephan as well as the Dalheim monastery also owned land . St. Alban, which had owned land in the Bodenheim district since the 8th century, was finally able to assert itself against the other landowners, above all by gaining local jurisdiction as local ruler .

A close correlation between Bodenheim and Mainz can be seen in the Mainz Wall Building Regulations from the 11th century. At that time between 1000 and probably since the Carolingian era , Bodenheim was one of the places from which the people of the city of Mainz had to repair the wall and moat and make them thoroughly defensive. Bodenheim was a closed village back then and not for centuries. Several family or clan members of the extensive family of the Wormsgau Count Cancor were resident and wealthy here . In addition, there were members of a second, perhaps third, count family in Bodenheim.

By the middle of the 12th century at the latest, the two Fronhöfe belonged to the monastery and later Knight's Monastery of St. Alban in Mainz. In each of them there was a Fronhof church, the one in Unterbodenheim was elevated to a parish church, the other was a chapel. The last successor was built in 1889, it serves as a pilgrimage chapel under the name "Maria-Oberndorf" to this day . The first evidence of the existence of Albanian property in Bodenheim is offered in 1130. At that time, Provost Reginhard acquired three small outdoor courtyards for his monastery by buying St. Alban. With the transfer of the two Fronhöfe into the possession of the monastery, St. Alban also received the bailiwick, d. H. the high and low jurisdiction over the whole village.

Two Fronhöfe, which are mentioned in a document dated August 21, 1263, must have been built around 500. Bodenheim became famous because here, like hardly any other village, the freedom movement of a medieval rural community can be observed. Between 1277 and 1525, the citizens wrested important rights from their local rulers, which are known as the “Bodenheim freedom”. They were recorded in a wisdom book and regulated the rights and duties of citizens.

Witch trials

In 1608 the courthouse was today's town hall with its valuable half-timbering, which was renewed several times, and the original wood-carved coat of arms in the bay window. At the beginning of the 17th century Bodenheim became a center of the European witch hunt . After malicious defamation, terrible detention conditions and cruel torture, at least 27 citizens lost their lives following witch trials. The trials in Bodenheim began with the arrest of the widow Merg Scholl on October 8, 1612. She was suspected of having charmed a child in the bakery to the point of death. In the spring of 1613 Scholl was convicted and burned with two other women. It was not until the end of the Thirty Years' War that a line could be drawn under this gloomy chapter. In 2014 the benefit theater musical “Hexe! De Deibel shall get it! "

Modern times

The place name Bodenheim has also become a family name, as is the case with many other Rheinhessen towns. A Jewish Bodenheim family has been known since the 16th century, a surname that Lion Feuchtwanger's later wife also bore. In the 1930s, the Theodor Bodenheim family, born June 13, 1877 Mannheim, † July 12, 1946 New York, had to emigrate to the United States.

On June 29, 1988, two US F-16 C fighter planes collided over the neighboring community of Nackenheim and crashed over an uninhabited area near Bodenheim. One of the pilots was able to save himself with the ejection seat , while the pilot Captain Mike Crandall was killed.

coat of arms

Bodenheim coat of arms
Blazon : "Above a black shield base in blue a left-facing silver donkey standing in front of a golden trough, on the left a golden vase with handles from which a green oak branch grows inclined to the right."
Justification of the coat of arms: The municipality carried this coat of arms for a long time without authorization, in 1990 it was made by the then responsible district government of Rheinhessen-Pfalz in Neustadt.

According to legend, the provost of St. Alban's Abbey , to which Bodenheim also belonged, demanded the right to mint from the emperor , but the emperor mocked him: “Does he want to mint coins? He should coin an old donkey! ”Full of irony, the donkey was later chosen as the heraldic animal .
