The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Alban in Bodenheim, Rhineland-Hesse ( Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a church building belonging to the Mainz diocese . The hall church from 1830 is considered an important building of late classicism in Rheinhessen .

history

At the site of the current parish church , there were already at least two previous buildings that were completed in the 12th and 17th centuries and were also consecrated to St. Alban of Mainz . From 1828 to 1830 the church building, which still exists today, was built by the Mainz city ​​architect Augustin Wetter (1765–1838) under the influence of the architect Georg Moller (1784–1852).

In 1852 the high altar was erected in St. Alban , which originally comes from the Church of Our Lady in Worms . In 1859 the pulpit was acquired from the parish church of St. Stephan in Mainz. Two side altars from Mainz Cathedral followed in 1869 and 1870 - a Mater Dolorosa and an Ecce homo altar . In the course of the decades the nave was also decorated with paintings, the interior decoration was completed in 1910 with stucco work and ceiling paintings .

The parish church of St. Alban in Bodenheim is a hall church that was built in the style of late classicism in a west-east direction. The square church tower with a height of 52.5 meters rises above the main portal on the west side. This is followed by the nave with a barrel vault . The end on the east side is the square choir with the semicircular apse .

In the interior of the church, the high altar and the two side altars in the Baroque style and the Rococo pulpit are of particular importance in terms of art history. There is also a Gothic baptismal font with tracery inside the church near the entrance . The large ceiling painting in the barrel vault shows Saint Alban preaching to pagan Germans . The Visitation of the Virgin Mary can be seen in the dome above the choir , while the Holy Trinity is depicted above the apse .
