Zotzenheim in Rheinhessen is a municipality in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Sprendlingen-Gensingen , which has its administrative seat in the municipality of Sprendlingen .

history

Early history and the Middle Ages

The early history of Zotzenheim is closely linked to the neighboring Sprendlingen settlement . When the Franks took possession of the land around 500 , Zotzenheim was assigned to the Urmark Sprendlingen, which also contained a royal Franconian villa. From there, the village of Zotzenheim was probably created as a fully free settlement in the following period (around 650 AD) after the fallow land was cleared for clearing.

Today's Zotzenheim was first mentioned in a document as early as 771: The Fulda monastery received a vineyard in “Zarezanheim”, located in Wormsgau , as a gift. From the 12th century onwards it is usually called “Zozenheim” and “Zotzenheim”, but “Zozinheim” (1133) and “Cotzinheim” (1405) also appear. In 1133 Archbishop Adalbert I of Mainz bought an estate from a nobleman named Hugo in the village of Zotzenheim in the Nahegau in the county of Count Emicho von Schmidtburg , which he donated to the Mainz cathedral chapter . From this last count of the Nahegau, Zotzenheim seems to have come to the Wild- and Raugrafen and later to the Counts of Sponheim .

Already in the 14th century it belonged to the Vorderen Grafschaft Sponheim , which was last jointly owned by the Electoral Palatinate and Baden , until the barter agreement concluded between Palatinate and Baden in 1701 put an end to this community. As a result, Zotzenheim came to the Electoral Palatinate in 1708 and was assigned to the Oberamt Kreuznach , which remained until the French occupation of the Left Bank of the Rhine in 1794. The French registry office entries up to the year 1814 remind of the following period under French rule. In 1816 Zotzenheim came to the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

In 1316 there was already a parish church in Zotzenheim, on which the church in Welgesheim was dependent. This parish church was dedicated to St. Martin. A magnificent Carolingian lintel on the west side of this church, which was rebuilt in the Gothic period , proves that the church in Zotzenheim is very old in its construction . In 1316 the church was under the archdeaconate of the provost of St. Maria outside Mainz and belonged to the dean's office in Partenheim .

The Raugrafen had to exercise the right of patronage over the church. In 1404, however, the brothers Johann and Friedrich, Wildgrafen zu Dhaun and Rheingrafen zum Stein gave away their patronage rights to the collegiate monastery on the Johannesberg near Dhaun Castle . Archbishop Johann II of Mainz confirmed this donation in the same year and at the same time incorporated the parish church of Zotzenheim into the aforementioned collegiate monastery. This incorporation was also confirmed by Pope Innocent VII in 1405.

Modern times

The split in faith brought about a major change in church conditions. The Reformed ousted the Catholics from the Church, took possession of them for themselves and employed their own preacher. It was not until 1689 that the Catholics were granted the right to use the church and since that time catholic services have been held again by an Augustinian canon from Pfaffen-Schwabenheim . The Catholics now belonged to the parish of Welgesheim .

Upon termination of the provost Pfaffen-Schwabenheim, in 1802 and the re-division of the Diocese of Mainz have been assigned to the parish Sprendlingen. The church in Zotzenheim remained a simultaneous church until its own Catholic church was built in 1900 . Tithe was always associated with the right of patronage. Part of it, however, seems to have been a feudal fief of the Counts of Ingelheim since the 15th century . As Philipp von Ingelheim and his cousin Karl announced in 1419 . They received their share until the end of the 18th century. The little tithe was due to the Reformed pastor.

A noble family bore their name from Zotzenheim. In 1226 a Dieterich and in 1299 a Theodorich von Zotzenheim appear in documents. The population of the village of Zotzenheim was 174 in 1705 (112 Reformed, 56 Catholic, 6 Lutheran ) by 1800 there were 266. In 1910 375 souls and in 1950 there were 451. In civil terms, the community has had a sole mayor's office since 1838, previously the community Welgesheim was co-administered.

Younger story

The village community center

In 1894 the old schoolhouse was rebuilt in its current state. In 1900 the Catholic Church was built and the first water supply network was laid. In 1901 the gymnastics and sports club was founded, which was particularly successful in handball in the following years . The course of the Wiesbach was regulated in 1903 and moved closer to Zotzenheim. Even the ditch that had led around the village and was lined with tall, mighty effen was thrown over and the trees cut away. The moat was probably a remnant from the earlier system used to fortify the village to protect it against external enemies. In 1906 the field clean-up was carried out.

In 1972, through an administrative reform, the Verbandsgemeinde Sprendlingen-Gensingen was formed, to which Zotzenheim also belongs. From now on the children from Zotzenheim attended the schools in Sprendlingen. In 1974 the school building was converted into a village community center. In 1975 a first new building area called "Hinter der Hecke" was designated, which was expanded in 1986. In 1985 a kindergarten was set up which is attended by the children of Zotzenheim and the neighboring community of Welgesheim. In 1986 all local roads were rebuilt and the water pipes completely renewed. An industrial park called "Am neue Graben", started in 1990, was expanded in 1996. In the same year, the designation of the new building area "In der Mühlgasse" began, but was not completed. From 2004 a new building area called “An den Sech Morgen” was developed and built on. A village community center built in 2003 is used for citizens 'encounters and club life: there is a gymnastics club with a handball department, ballet and gymnastics groups, a carnival club, church choir, farmers' club, rural women’s club and the volunteer fire brigade .
