Propstei (church)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Provost (obsolete also provost of Latin praepositura , "the office of supervisor, -Aufsehers") is originally a monastery , where a provost projects, also the word refers to the office, the dignity (dignity), the office area or the Office - or residence of a provost. The respective meaning results from the context.

Evangelical Churches in Germany

In some Protestant regional churches and the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church , the provost is an administrative unit. The use of language is inconsistent: In some regional churches such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany , the provost is the lower administrative level and is made up of several parishes . In terms of general administration, this is comparable to the German district and corresponds to the deanery in the Roman Catholic Church . In other regional churches such as the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau and the Evangelical Church in Central Germany , on the other hand, the Propstei is the middle administrative level, whose general administration is comparable to the German administrative district, and is made up of deaneries and church districts.

At the head of the provost is the provost. At the lower administrative level, provosts have the provost synod as a body.

Roman Catholic Church

In the Roman Catholic Church , for historical reasons, there are several variants of the Propstei. What they have in common is that the official bears the title provost and in the vast majority of cases there is or was a connection to a cathedral or collegiate chapter or to a (monastic) monastery . For example, monastic settlements are also referred to as provosts. This can be an independent establishment under canon law (comparable to the status of an abbey ) or a so-called dependent house (comparable to a priory ).
