Georg Schwaiger (historian)

Georg Schwaiger (born January 23, 1925 in Hienheim , Niederbayern, † November 9, 2019 in Munich ) was a German Catholic prelate and church historian .

Life

Georg Schwaiger was engaged in the Reich Labor Service and in the Wehrmacht (Air Force) from 1943 to 1945; In 1945 he was first taken prisoner by the English, then American and French. From 1945 to 1947 he studied philosophy, Catholic theology and history at the Philosophical-Theological University of Regensburg . In 1947 he moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1950, Schwaiger was promoted to Dr. Cardinal Franz Wilhelm as Bishop of Regensburg (1649–1661) with his dissertation. theol. and was initially a chaplain in Wörth an der Donau in 1950/51. On March 26, 1951, he was ordained a priest in Regensburg. In 1955 he completed his habilitation with the text The old Bavarian dioceses of Freising, Passau and Regensburg between secularization and concordat for the subject of church history at the theological faculty of the LMU Munich and worked as a private lecturer. He was a student of Franz Xaver Seppelt .

From 1962 to 1971 he was professor for Bavarian church history at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and from 1971 to 1993 there professor for church history of the Middle Ages and modern times. Schwaiger was dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty several times (1968–1969, 1979–1981, 1987–1989). In 1993 he retired.

He was editor of the "Contributions to the History of the Diocese of Regensburg" and published several books, including on the history of the Pope, such as the Little Lexicon of the Popes and the Papacy and Popes of the 20th Century . In the 3rd edition of the Lexicon for Theology and Church , Schwaiger wrote numerous biographical articles, in particular on various popes and other figures in church history.
