The archive of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising (AEM) is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church in Munich .

history

In addition to the archive of the Hochstift Freising , the archive of the cathedral chapter of Freising and the archive of the clerical council for the diocesan administration were created from the 10th century . During the secularization in 1802, the first two archives were confiscated by the Bavarian government . The diocesan administration, which continued to exist, was allowed to keep its archive.

This archive moved to Munich together with the diocesan administration in 1821, where it formed the basis of the archives of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . In addition, there were the minutes of the old cathedral chapter, files from the consistorial archive in Salzburg and the Salzburg archdeaconate Baumburg, Chiemsee and Gars and archives of the Chiemsee diocese . The spiritual councilor Joseph Jakob von Heckenstaller was able to acquire material classified as unimportant by government agencies. After him, the archive is also known as the Heckenstalleriana in professional circles . In addition, from 1821 the archive of the Munich Metropolitan Chapter and an archiepiscopal house archive were created. By Martin of Deutinger , 1814 registrar in Generalvikariat , the archive was after the pertinence ordered. In recent years, the original order of significant parts of the holdings has been made comprehensible again through digital indexing based on the provenance principle .

During the Second World War, a large part of the inventory was relocated. The remainder was destroyed by a bomb attack on April 25, 1944. After 1945 the holdings were stored in the temporary office building , the Palais Montgelas on Promenadeplatz . In 1958 the choir and sacristy part of the Carmelite Church was rebuilt for the archive. The lack of space in the steadily growing archive in Munich led to the establishment of an archive depot in Freising in 1984.

The long-time archive director Peter Pfister retired on July 1, 2018. From April 1, 2019, his successor will be Johannes Merz, previously Chancellor of the Episcopal Curia in the Diocese of Würzburg.
