The former Carmelite Church of St. Nikolaus is the oldest Baroque church in Munich, still largely in its original state . Today it houses the archives of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and the library of the Munich Metropolitan Chapter as well as an event hall.

location

The Karmelitenkirche ( Karmeliterstraße 1) is located on Promenadeplatz in the Kreuzviertel of Munich's historic old town.

history

After Elector Maximilian I vowed in 1620 to donate a votive church for a victory in the Battle of the White Mountains , the baroque church was built in 1654 by Marx Schinnagl as a replacement for the old Carmelite Church according to plans by Hans Konrad Asper . In 1660 the monastery church was consecrated.

In the course of the expansion of the promenade into a bourgeois promenade, Nikolaus Schedel von Greiffenstein changed the original facade from 1657 from 1802 to 1811. The Carmelite Church was now given a strong classical character.

The church was badly damaged in the Second World War and was rebuilt in a simplified manner by Sep Ruf in 1955–1957 . However, only the facade and the choir apse were reconstructed. The church was profaned and has served as an archive building ever since. An event and exhibition room was set up in the nave. In 1981, frescoes by Johann Anton Gumpp (1654–1719) were uncovered in the richly stuccoed former sacristy .
