The Promenadeplatz in Munich is an elongated rectangular square in an east-west direction between Maffeistraße and Pacellistraße in the Kreuzviertel of the old town.

From the 15th century on, the town's salt stalls stood on the site of today's square and were demolished in 1778. The resulting square was initially used and named as a parade square and was converted into a green area in 1804 . It has had its current name since the beginning of the 19th century. In the time of National Socialism , the square was named Ritter von Epp-Platz (Reichsstatthalter in Bavaria).

Like the adjacent Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse , the Promenadeplatz was an address for the aristocratic palaces concentrated in the Kreuzviertel. In 1885 the baroque Palais Hörwarth was demolished for the construction of the Parcus House . In 1951 the war-damaged baroque Maffei-Palais was demolished to make room for the extension of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof , into which the former Palais Montgelas was also integrated. A representative building for the Dresdner Bank and the Gunetzrhainerhaus can still be found on the square . For the history of the house at Promenadeplatz 21, at the corner of Karmeliterstraße, which today belongs to Deutsche Bank , see the corresponding section on Karmeliterstraße .

Five monuments have been erected on the square today: the Lorenz-Westenrieder statue, the Orlando di Lasso statue, the monument to Elector Max Emanuel , the monument to Christoph Willibald Gluck and the monument to Maximilian Joseph Graf von Montgelas . The monument to Wiguläus von Kreittmayr originally standing here was moved to Maximiliansplatz and was not rebuilt there after the Second World War. The di Lasso statue is a curiosity, and since Michael Jackson's death his fans have decorated it with posters , flowers and grave candles . You remember Jackson here because he stayed at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof several times when he was in Munich.
