Lorenz Westenrieder , from 1808 Ritter von Westenrieder , (born August 1, 1748 in Munich ; † March 15, 1829 ibid) was a German theologian , educator , historian and publicist of the Enlightenment . He is considered to be the rediscoverer of Bavarian prehistory, but also dealt with contemporary Bavaria. In addition, he was a Munich local patriot.

life and work

Westenrieder graduated from the Jesuit high school in Munich in 1764 (today: Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich ). He then studied philosophy (= basic studies) and theology at the adjoining lyceum. In 1771 he was ordained a priest . After the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773 he became professor for poetics and rhetoric at the grammar school in Landshut and in 1774 for rhetoric in Munich. In 1776 he was appointed book censorship council and in 1799 he became director of the book censorship commission. In 1777 he became a member and 1779 secretary of the historical class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , whose director he became in 1808. In this role he campaigned for the development of lithography and contributed funds for the construction of the first larger lithographic press. At the beginning of 1779 he joined the Order of Illuminati , which he left again at the end of the year. In 1786 he was appointed ecclesiastical council and cathedral capitular of Munich, in 1808 he received the knight's cross of the civil merit order of the Bavarian crown, with which the ennoblement was connected.

Westenrieder was a supporter of a moderate Enlightenment . In addition to his historical and theoretical works, he also wrote novels and plays. His historical and literary work comprises more than a hundred volumes, which often deal with the socio-cultural development of Munich and its residents. Westenrieder is considered one of the most important Bavarian writers of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Conception of art

In his opinion, painting in the great outdoors can achieve just as good results as ideal landscapes in the studio. This led to the founding of private painting schools, which, as in Munich, were called the Westenrieder painting school .
