Heckenstaller was ordained a priest in Regensburg in 1772 . From 1798 he was director of the clerical government in Freising . In 1803 there was a vacancy in the diocese of Freising as a result of secularization in Bavaria . The previous auxiliary bishop Johann Nepomuk von Wolf carried out the ordinations on behalf of Heckenstaller. In the conflict with the Bavarian elector in 1805/6, the state reorganized the former monastery parishes. A total of 109 parishes from the Salzburg diocese area were also incorporated. On June 5, 1817, a concordat between Pope Pius VII and King Maximilian I Joseph was concluded, which provided for the establishment of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . Heckenstaller resigned on February 16, 1818 and became the first dean of the new Munich metropolitan chapter . Heckenstaller died in Munich on November 7, 1832.
