location
The place is at an altitude of 356 m above sea level. NN on the left bank of the Danube opposite the village of Eining , on the connecting road from Neustadt via Irnsing to Essing in the Altmühltal . Regensburg is about 45 km to the east, Ingolstadt 30 km to the west. Munich is about 100 km south of the town.
history
Excavations by the University of Leiden revealed that there was a Neolithic (around 5000 BC) settlement in the area of Hienheim .
The place is referred to in several sources as "Hohenheim" ("home on the hill") as early as 1097/98.
In the vicinity of Hienheim was the beginning of the Roman fortification against the Germanic area, the Limes . The 166 km long Rhaetian Limes (from Hienheim to Lorch an der Rems ) consisted primarily of stone walls up to three meters high and wooden watchtowers, while the 382 km long Upper Germanic Limes (running from Lorch in a north-westerly direction to Bonn) mostly composed of earth walls, trenches and palisades. The construction of the Roman Limes began as early as 1 AD, the Germanic Limes was built from 84 AD. From 260 AD the Limes had to be gradually abandoned due to Alemannic raids.
The so-called “Hadrian's Column”, a monument erected in 1856 on the road to Kelheim , marks the beginning of the border wall . The Limes experienced its heyday under the emperors Trajan (ruled from 98 to 117 AD) and Hadrian (ruled from 117 to 138 AD). The Upper-Germanic Limes is an archaeological monument and since 2005 a World Heritage Site of UNESCO . In 1979, aerial archeology discovered the Hienheim small fort belonging to the border system .
Not far from there is a monument of a completely different kind. "Iron Hand", created in the 19th century: According to a legend, a seamstress regularly encountered a wolf at this point on her way to work, to whom she always brought a piece of bread. Once when she had no bread with her, the wolf is said to have mauled and eaten her, with the exception of her right hand, which had always fed him.
The previously independent municipality of Hienheim was dissolved on January 1, 1978. The greater part of the previous municipality, including the wasteland of Haderfleck in the east, was assigned to the city of Neustadt an der Donau.
Two other smaller, incoherent parts came as exclaves to Kelheim and in it to the Stausacker district . The larger part contained the hamlet of Swabia including the Church of St. Pankratius with around 20 inhabitants and an area of 276 hectares . The smaller part, 700 meters to the northwest and completely surrounded by the community-free area of Hienheimer Forst, contained the wasteland of Schlott with five inhabitants on an area of a good three hectares.
Infrastructure
Hienheim is an elongated village with a population of around 700 and a predominantly rural character.
But some craft businesses have also settled here or are continuing the tradition. There is also a sports field for the local football club. Well known far beyond the borders of Hienheim is the glider airfield near the village, which attracts aviation enthusiasts from all over Germany in summer.
A taxi ferry across the Danube connects Hienheim with Eining. On May 4, 2006, this ferry sank; However, the four people on board were rescued without major injuries.
The German Limes Cycle Route runs through the village . This follows the Upper German-Raetian Limes over 818 km from Bad Hönningen on the Rhine to Regensburg on the Danube .
The German Limes Road also runs through the town.
The Limes hiking trail also leads through Hienheim.
Churches
Hienheim's Catholic Church of St. George has a Romanesque choir tower, which probably dates from the 12th century. In the 16th and 19th centuries, the church was expanded further, a cemetery wall was added and it was last restored in 1985.
To the north of the church is the late Gothic St. Sebastian's Chapel, which was modified in the Baroque style .
