Heiligenstadt (Neustadt)

The village of Heiligenstadt is a district of the town of Neustadt an der Donau in the Kelheim district in Lower Bavaria .

The place lies in a wide plain, in which the Abens and Danube valleys unite. Heiligenstadt is almost spatially integrated with the health resort Bad Gögging to the north . Regensburg is about 45 km to the east and Ingolstadt 30 km to the west. Munich is about 90 km south of the town.

history

Heiligenstadt is first mentioned in written sources in the 12th century. In a traditional note from 1172, witnesses are named “de sancto loco”, from the holy place or holy place. The view that the original Neustadt, which was still called Seligenstadt at the time of the town elevation, should be sought in Heiligenstadt should not be correct. The lords of Heiligenstadt can be traced back to the 15th century in documents.

During the formation of the political communities in 1818 , the village was incorporated into the town of Gögging and with this on July 1, 1972, as part of a regional reform, it was incorporated into the town of Neustadt an der Donau.

The Church of St. John the Baptist and Evangelist is of Romanesque origin and dates from the 12th century. It has a side altar dedicated to St. Stephen. St. Stephen is also the patron of the church.

Economy and Infrastructure

Heiligenstadt has about 120 inhabitants and is characterized by agriculture. To the west of the village is the “Heiligenstädter Moos” nature reserve . The Regensburg – Ingolstadt railway passes by.
