Sittling (Neustadt)

The village of Sittling is a district of the city of Neustadt an der Donau in the Kelheim district in Lower Bavaria . Sittling belongs to the Hallertau .

The place is to the east of the rivers Danube and Abens , which run parallel to the north , on a steep bank edge, which begins to stand out from the plains of the predominant meadow landscape. Sittling is almost spatially integrated with the spa town of Bad Gögging to the south .

Regensburg is about 45 km to the east and Ingolstadt 30 km to the west. Munich is about 95 km south of the town.

history

No Roman traces are known in the area of ​​Sittling . However, the Roman fort Eining and the Roman bathing facilities Bad Göggings were adjacent.

Like many places in the district of Kelheim, Sittling is an “ing” place , the ending of which indicates that it was established during the time of the oldest Baier conquest in the 6th or 7th century. Accordingly, Sittling is mentioned as a church village as early as 724 under the name "Sigling" and as the seat of a noble estate in the Monumenta Boica . The place is called in records from 900 "ad Sikkilingun", which means something like "with the people of little Sikko".

Around 1040 Sittling sat on Grimold I. He left two sons, Heinrich I. von Sittling and Biburg and Grimold II. Von Sittling and Arnhofen (1080-1123). Grimold II was guardian of the Weltenburg monastery . His son Gottfried I followed him from 1120 to 1147 in the guardianship of Weltenburg and called himself von Sittling and von Wöhr . His son Gottfried II von Sittling and Wöhr also exercised the umbrella bailiff over Weltenburg from 1145 to 1184.

Count Heinrich I von Sittling and Biburg and his wife Bertha, daughter of Count Eberhard I von Ratzenhofen, called the "Blessed Bertha von Ratzenhofen", handed over the Biburg Castle, which they owned and originally married Bertha, as part of an inheritance her two younger sons Konrad and Arbeo. At the request of their mother Bertha, Konrad and Arbeo gave the cathedral in Bamberg their Biburg castle in 1125 , with the condition that a monastery be built there. Eberhard von Sittling and Biburg, whose brother became the first abbot of the Biburg monastery. The lords of Sittling were the ancestors of the lords of Altmannstein , Biburg and Wöhr.

Economy and Infrastructure

The village has 170 inhabitants and is almost exclusively agricultural and forestry. The focus here is on hop growing . Sittling had the headquarters of a medium-sized brick factory .

Personalities

  • Eberhard von Sittling und Biburg , born in Sittling around 1085, was Archbishop of Salzburg from 1147 to 1164 and was venerated as a saint.
  • "Blessed" Bertha von Ratzenhofen, also called "Blessed" Bertha von Biburg († 1151), the mother of "Saint Eberhard" is considered to be the founder of the Biburg Monastery and the Allersdorf pilgrimage church .
