Miroslav Katětov

Miroslav Katětov (born March 17, 1918 in Chembar in Russia , † December 15, 1995 ) was a Czech mathematician , psychologist and chess player . His Czech father was a member of the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia , his mother was Russian, and the family came to Czechoslovakia in 1923.

Miroslav Katětov finished his studies in 1939 at the Faculty of Science at Charles University in Prague . During the war he had a job at the psychological institute, where he analyzed statistical data. As a student he came into contact with topology and functional analysis ; During the war he attended private seminars (the university was closed) on these subjects, which were to be his main field of work for the next 25 years. Among other things, he worked on normal spaces , dimensional theory and uniform spaces . Since the 1970s, he turned back to mathematical applications in psychology . He was invited speaker at the ICM 1962 in Stockholm.

From 1954 to 1957 Miroslav Katětov was director of Charles University in Prague.

Katětov was also a very good chess player. In 1951 he was awarded the title of International Master by the World Chess Federation FIDE . After calculating his historical Elo number , he was in July 1944 with a rating of 2644 on the 16th place in the world rankings. He participated in several friendly comparative matches for the Czechoslovak national team and the city selection of Prague. Katětov won the 1944 championship in Prague superior with 80% result, he was in 1946 in Ostrava second in the championship of Czechoslovakia.
