history

As with many places in the Dürnbuch Forest, it can be assumed that Geibenstetten was a clearing of the foundation of Duke Tassilo III. Münchsmünster Monastery founded for this purpose from the second half of the 8th century. The village is said to have been mentioned for the first time in 1189 in a tradition of the Biburg monastery as "Gisemunstetten". Other sources assume that Geibenstetten was first mentioned in the Urbarium Dicatuus Baiuwariae anitquissimum , the oldest duke surbar , around 1240. The place also appeared under the name "Geysenstetten".

The formerly independent parish of Geibenstetten included the town of Neukirchen and the hamlet of Umbertshausen , also located in the middle of the Dürnbuch forest , which was sometimes also called "Sumerts-" or "Sommertshausen". Forest path names such as “Neukirchner Totenweg” or “Umbertshauser Kirchweg” are still reminiscent of the two branches. In 1640 Geibenstetten lost its status as an independent parish and was blown over to Mühlhausen . When the political communities were formed in 1808/1818 , Geibenstetten and Umbertshausen, which consisted of four farms, were combined into one unit. As part of the regional reform , the municipality Geibenstetten was incorporated into the city of Neustadt an der Donau on January 1, 1978.

The former parish church of St. Andrew was built in the late 12th century as a Romanesque complex. It is still preserved as such. The tower was renovated in the Baroque style in the 18th century . The tympanum of the original Romanesque church portal, which was walled up in 1843, shows a lamb with a cross, two heads and other mythical creatures.

Economy and Infrastructure

The village is characterized exclusively by agriculture and forestry, with a focus on hop growing . The population is around 130. Geibenstetten has a small outdoor pool .
