Peter Thomas Bauer

Peter Thomas Bauer, Baron Bauer (born November 6, 1915 in Budapest as Péter Tamás Bauer , † May 2, 2002 in London ) was a British development economist of Hungarian descent. He was seen as a critic of the view that development aid from abroad benefits developing countries.

Life

Bauer first studied law in Budapest before studying economics in England at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge from 1934 until he graduated in 1937. After a short period of work in the private sector for the trading company with contacts in the Far East Guthrie & Co. , he joined the London School of Economics in 1960 , where he was a professor until 1983.

On February 15, 1983, he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Bauer , of Market Ward in the City of Cambridge, and was given a seat in the British House of Lords . Since 1975 he has been a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .

Act

For Bauer, the core of development is to be found in the expansion of individual options. The state assumes the role of protecting life, freedom and property so that the individual can pursue his own goals and wishes.
