The Burgstall Greut refers to an abandoned hilltop castle at 731 m above sea level. NN high Schlossberg east of the Hochgreut homestead and north of Haid, a district of Wessobrunn in Upper Bavaria . The castle belonged to the local nobility of Greuter or Gereuter, who are documented there for the 14th century. It is evidenced by written documents and by the Haider street name Schlossbergstrasse . In the 16th century Greut was called an "old castle stable". Remains of the castle could still be seen in the 18th century. In connection with the founding of the Wessobrunn monastery, it was assumed in the past that a castle stood here as early as the 8th century, which was the seat of the legendary discoverer of the Wessobrunn springs, Wezzo . According to legend, an underground corridor ran from the tower of the monastery church of Wessobrunn, the gray duke , to the castle, which is said to have been in use until the middle of the 15th century.
Connection with the nameless Burgstall near Haid
The location of the castle stables cannot be proven with certainty. However, there is a ground monument on the Schlossberg, northeast of Haid, which corresponds to the description of the location in the written sources. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments has identified the site as the castle stables of the high or late Middle Ages, but did not specify it. Wall systems can still be seen in the relief image and on site. Since there are no other suitable finds in the vicinity, there is a certain probability that the soil monument is the remains of Greut Castle.
