  • 1556: The Shaanxi earthquake is the most momentous earthquake in human history. The disaster in China claims an estimated 830,000 lives.

  • 1904: An overturned kerosene lamp in a margarine factory starts a fire in Ålesund , almost completely destroying the Norwegian city and leaving 10,000 people homeless. Kaiser Wilhelm II sends four ships with relief supplies and supports the Art Nouveau reconstruction .
  • 1909: A 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Iran kills around 5,500.
  • 1909: The British ocean liner RMS Republic of the White Star Line collided with another ship in the fog off Nantucket and sank, killing 6 people. She is the largest British passenger ship to have crashed to date.
  • 1973: Eldfell volcano erupts on the Icelandic island of Heimaey . The entire island has to be evacuated, but there is only one death.
