Hobart

Hobart (formerly Hobart Town ) is the capital of Tasmania , Australia . The city with around 200,000 inhabitants (2016) is located at the mouth of the Derwent River , at the foot of the 1271  m high Mount Wellington in the southern part of Tasmania. Hobart is home to the University of Tasmania and has a port and international airport . The city is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hobart and the diocese of Tasmania of the Anglican Church of Australia .

history

Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney . The city's history began in 1803 in what is now Risdon Cove , when Lieutenant Governor David Collins founded a convict colony with around 300 convicts, a number of marines and around 30 free settlers . In 1804 the settlement was moved to the western side of the Derwent River in the area of today's Sullivans Cove . It was named after Robert Hobart, 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire , and was initially called Hobart Town or Hobarton.

The Tasmanians resident there were killed or driven out. Whalers abducted women and girls onto their ships for sexual purposes, and diseases (flu, measles, smallpox) that were brought in also decimated the indigenous population because they lacked immunization .

Charles Darwin visited the city in 1836 on an expedition. At that time the city had about 14,000 inhabitants, the whole of Tasmania about 36,000 inhabitants. From 1842 the settlement could call itself a city; It received its current shortened name in 1881.

Due to its location on an island and as a city with a seaport, Hobart has an oceanic climate . The temperature differences between summer and winter and between day and night are less great than on mainland Australia.

economy

Panoramic shot

In addition to tourism and the seaport, industrial companies such as catamaran manufacturing (e.g. Incat ), wood processing and zinc smelting (near Risdon Cove ) play an economic role. Some breweries and viticulture in the vicinity of the city are also significant . Hobart is also popular with tourists as a starting point for exploring the island of Tasmania. The port also serves as a starting point for Australian and French Antarctic expeditions.

traffic

Electric trams already existed here at the beginning of the 20th century , connecting the station with the suburbs of New Town, Queensborough , Wellington , Glenorchy , Risdon Cove and Bellerive . In recent years, discussions have been held to restore the existing infrastructure of the Hobart tram, which was discontinued in 1960, and to create a modern light rail service through the Hobart districts to Glenorchy and on to Bridgewater.

There are several port facilities in Hobart for shipping traffic. Traffic within Tasmania is mainly by road. The railway now plays only a minor role; a railway line transports goods along the west coast of Tasmania and from Launceston through the Midlands to Hobart harbor.

The Derwent River, which is up to 1000 meters wide in several places, is spanned by two bridges, the Tasman Bridge on the Tasman Highway , via which the airports are also reached, and the Bowen Bridge, 12 km north of it, on the Goodwood Road . There are also numerous ferry connections across the river.

Hobart has two airports, Hobart International Airport and the Cambridge Aerodrome, which is not served by scheduled services. Both are about 10–15 kilometers east of the city in close proximity to each other. Hobart is also a popular landing point for cruise ships.

Culture

The Sydney-Hobart regatta, which starts every year on December 26th ( Boxing Day ) in Sydney, is known worldwide . One of the main attractions is the weekly market on Salamanca Place , a row of 19th century department stores. In addition to the university, museums, theater and casino, there is also a botanical garden that is well worth seeing . In January 2011, the Museum of Old and New Art , the largest privately funded museum in Australia, opened, displaying works from the David Walsh collection . Brian Ritchie , the bass player for the Violent Femmes , has lived in Hobart for a number of years . In collaboration with the Museum of Old and New Art, he curates the annual music festival MONA-FOMA, at which important Australian and international artists perform.

The Hobart Synagogue , built in 1845, is the oldest synagogue in Australia.

In 2010 Hobart was the set for Arctic Blast .

Town twinning
