Graham McVilly , also Graeme McVilly , (born May 4, 1958 in Hobart , † April 21, 2002 in Huntingdon , United Kingdom ) was an Australian cyclist who was active on the road and track .

Athletic career

Graham McVilly was one of Australia's most successful road cyclists in the 1970s. He was Australian road racing champion twice - in 1970 and 1971 - and in 1976 he was runner-up. He won the Australian Herald Sun Tour three times - in 1971, 1973 and 1974 - after finishing second in 1969 and 1970. In 1975 he finished third at the Australian championship in two-man team driving, together with Laurie Venn . In 1978 he was the third time Australian champion, in the team pursuit on the track.

After finishing his cycling career, McVilly turned to equestrian sport . He died in 2002 at the age of 43 after a riding accident during a tournament in Great Britain.

Honors

In 1971 and 1973, Graham McVilly was named Australia's Cyclist of the Year with the Sir Hubert Opperman Trophy . In 2001, a year before his death, he was honored as one of three "Legends" on the Herald Sun Tour . In 2008 he was inducted into the Tasmanian Cycling Hall of Fame . In 2012, on the tenth anniversary of his death, the Southern Tasmanian Cycling Club organized the Graeme McVilly Memorial Race for the first time .
