Peter Besanko (born January 7, 1955 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian cyclist .

Athletic career

Besanko was active as a cyclist for over 20 years - from 1975 to 1996. During this time he almost exclusively competed in cycle races in Australia, with a few races in Belgium .

In 1986 Besanko won the Herald Sun Tour , where he was second in 1981 and 1984 and third in 1979. The year before he had had a serious car accident after which he had to spend several months in the hospital and he had already thought about giving up cycling. He won the Melbourne-Warrnambool race three times - in 1984, 1989 and 1992 - making it a record winner. In 1989 he dedicated the victory to his best friend and cousin David Allan , who was killed in a car accident in June of the same year. In 1976 and 1984 he was the Australian road racing champion. At the UCI Road World Championships 1985 in Giavera del Montello , he finished 30th.

In 1996 Besanko retired from cycling and is now an installer (as of 2012). His cousins ​​are racing cyclists Donald and David Allan.

Honors

In 1979, 1981 and 1984 Besanko was awarded the Sir Hubert Opperman Trophy as Australia's "Cyclist of the Year".
