Installer literally means “installer”.

This job description is often specified by adding the subject area:

In Baden-Württemberg, Austria and Bavaria, this job title is often used colloquially when referring to a plumber. Elsewhere, on the other hand, the term plumber is used colloquially but factually incorrectly . In South Tyrol the Italian loan translation "Hydrauliker" ( Italian Idraulico "Installateur") is used.

Originally (in contrast to heating or ventilation engineers), the installer originally installed pre-assembled devices and system components; its working depth was significantly less. Since, for reasons of rationality, pre-assembled system solutions are preferred in all areas of trade and industry, the difference is e.g. B. between a heating installer and a heating contractor has decreased.

The new name of the job in Germany is “ Plant mechanic for sanitary, heating and air conditioning ”. After completing the third year of training (half a year before the journeyman's examination), one of the additions “Focus on environmental technology”, “Focus on heat technology”, “Focus on gas and water technology” or “Focus on air conditioning technology” is selected.

The profession is a classic male domain . In 2010, the proportion of women in training and professional practice in the DACH countries was not more than 1.3%.
