Sanitary installer has basic vocational training in Switzerland and belongs to the professional field of building technology.

In Germany, the gas and water plumber was a training occupation until it was merged with the occupation of ventilation and heating construction to become a system mechanic for sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology .

The areas of work of the plumber are cold and hot water, sewage supply and disposal as well as heating construction .

The training lasts three years. The predecessor in the profession was called plumbing fitter .

The three learning locations are company, vocational school and inter-company courses . The vocational school is attended one day a week.
